Amazing Giant Gollum Installation by Weta at Wellington Airport

We probably don’t really need hype for the new film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey because it will be huge and awesome anyway, but there is never anything wrong with just doing something cool. Weta took to the Wellington Airport in New Zealand for an installation of a GIANT Gollum as a little promotion to the film and where it was filmed. From the rafters of the airport you see this monstrous and captivating Gollum diving for his fishes. It looks to be set up over a food court area which makes this actually fairly amusing. Watch out for drool down there, and watch the video of the lengths that one has to endure for this undertaking.

Now I want to go to New Zealand even more. THE HOBBIT!

A Sneak Peek into Stranger Factory’s “Subterrane” Group Sculpture Exhibit

  • by

It is almost time for the “Subteranne” group sculpture exhibit at Stranger Factory! Actually we are about one week away from a deluge of amazing sculpts by six extraordinary artists.

I think we should give you a taste or two of the jaw dropping works that will be for all our wonderment in Albuquerque. Above is a playful image of a couple creatures by Shing Yin Khor (Sawdust Bear) and Valency Genis getting to know each other before their final homes are mounted.

It looks as if one of Sawdust Bear’s fattybugs has migrated to New Mexico!

Dressed to impress and in ruffles! Valency’s creation is ready to party next week!

Keep an eye out for more sneak previews from the show!

Subterrane opens Nov. 9th with an opening reception from 6-9pm. A number of the exhibiting artists will be in attendance!

The Devilish Monsters & Minions of My Ghoul Friday

  • by

Happy Hallow’s Eve, everyone! In continuing with the coverage of artists who are currently rocking my socks, it is of utmost pleasure to present a special Halloween edition and introduce you all to the quirks and creativity of one of my favourite ladies, Ghoul Friday. I discovered her work on a whim at Toronto’s FanExpo in August and have been hooked ever since. She’s from the city, makes awesome paper clay monsters and has also published her own book: Brains vs. Coffee, which quite hilariously explores the pros and cons of the consuming, enjoying, storing, preparing and disposing of each.

Friday is an ardent follower of Halloweenia, clearly. Most of us are in these parts, but she takes it to a whole ‘nother level, crafting most of the decorations herself and changing it up every year. I mean, seriously, people:

Now that’s a Halloween party we’d all want to go to, amirite? A self-taught sculptor who got her start making large-scale props for Halloween parties for nearly a decade, she took the plunge and started making her own little monsters and minions in 2009, and attended her first convention as a vendor that summer. She’s been at it ever since.

Friday’s creations are a combo of paper clay, paper mache, fabric and polymer clay, and while she’d like to say it’s because she’s a sort of eco-warrior, “a lot of it has to do with habits from being part of the Haunter community, where you build items from scavenged goods,” she explains.

And What Do You Do with Cardboard?

  • by

We have talked about cardboard animal creations before and we all probably keep a supply of boxes sitting around to reship things out, but the work Daniel Agdad does with cardboard is simply astounding. He calls it “sketching with cardboard” but that is insane considering his sketching is 3 dimensional amazingness. His new show “Sets for a Film I’ll Never Make” at Off the Kerb Gallery opens Oct. 26, showcases scenes perfectly as the title describes. Intricate landscapes, machines, and building look like they would be on any movie set. It is baffling what some people pull off with what I have in my store room or recycle bin.

View the Vivacious World of Valency Genis

  • by

Ah!, Valency Genis, a vital gear in the world of Circus Posterus and a hilarious minion that cracks everyone up (she will kill me for that I think). Well Valency besides both of those, is an amazing talent and her work is a pleasure to enrich any wall!

Valency has an aptitude for creating creatures that even Dr. Seuss never dreamed up, and she has a fondness for putting these creations in the form of a taxidermy wall mount. Now do not be alarmed because these lovely animals are not true taxidermy but the much preferred proper faux taxidermy. Honestly, where else will you see a wall mount with an animal resembling the extinct genus Hippotragus leucophaeus with guinea worms all over it? The animals run from fascinating antlered walrus creations to the not so mythical chupacabra, but these are fun creations that are just like her personality. With Valency, the gambit is endless on what she can do with her art, and I can’t wait to see what awesomeness she is contributing to Stranger Factory’s “Subterrane” group sculpture exhibit coming Nov. 9.

The Stunning Skills of Yosiell Lorenzo

  • by

If one of your usual haunts is the Circus Posterus world, then you have seen the name or work here and there of Yosiell LorenzoActually, if you look closely, you will see some of Yosiell’s work in collection shots of CP board members, but for those that haven’t been exposed to his world, I am here to help.

Yosiell, pronounced “Joe-See-Ell”, is a Puerto Rican artist raised in Connecticut. Best known for his amazing sculpture series known as “Sicklings”, one could easily see the skills this man posses. The sicklings are a nice 3D representation of Frustration, loneliness, despair, and so on. Their downtrodden slouch and sullen eyes easily can represent us all on our must harsh days. It doesn’t stop there, Yosiell also knows his way around  paintings, ink, graphite, and more. Recently, his line of prints have been a hot commodity and becoming instant classics.

We can’t wait to see what Yosiell has in store when he brings some of  his new creations to  Stranger Factory’s “Subterrane” group sculpture exhibit coming Nov. 9.

Take a Look into Carisa Swenson’s Goblinfruit Studio

  • by

Goblinfruit Studio is a place where curious creatures and aberrant animals are born, but it is also the home of Carisa Swenson. It is a pleasure to do a post on Carisa. In the many months she and I have been corresponding on social media outlets, she has been abundantly sweet and completely effervescent on doll making.

Carisa is based out of New York city, but you may have seen her in several shows around the country, numerous publications, at the recent Spectrum Fantastic Art live, or even displayed in the Kidrobot NY store. If it isn’t obvious, Carisa is well schooled in doll making having studied under the tutelage of renowned doll maker Wendy Froud. Her creations tend to weave a wonderful back story that are only seen when gazed upon closely. Look into the despondent eyes of “Marcel” as he holds an image of a past love, or the determination in the facial features of the fox in “Kitsune Magic” The character in these creations are a sight to be seen, and the primed execution Carisa outs forth is exceptional.

For more on Carisa and Goblinfruit, visit the site here, and we are proud to have her in Stranger Factory’s “Subterrane” group sculpture exhibit coming Nov. 9.

The Meticulous Makings of Miss Monster

  • by

She has a love for monsters, a grasp on tentacles, a legendary twitter feed, and seeks refuge with the WWE, she is Miss Monster!

Melita Curphy aka Miss Monster simply put, makes monsters. She even does this full time.Talking to her the past couple years at Dragon*Con, you can see the compassion and vehemence she has for her craft. This was never more obvious than with the costume she endured during Dragon*Con. That was an undertaking! Her nom de plume fits her art perfectly!

Melita, in my opinion, has perfected making dolls and masks. The masks are uncannily amazing and detailed. The dolls she creates are all hand sewn, hand cast, hand painted, and hand amazing. Seriously, these could be creatures you see in Labyrinth or the Dark Crystal scurrying around. Melita doesn’t stop there, she is also well crafted with her paints, design, leather crafting, and printing. She is all over mediums actually.

Check out Miss Monster here, and we are proud to have her in Stranger Factory’s “Subterrane” group sculpture exhibit coming Nov. 9.
