Dance Sippy, Dance! The Bloody Fun Creatures of Paige Krueger

  • by

Every once in a while you come across an artist who just rocks your socks right off. Their work just clicks with you, you love it the moment you see it, and it’s sort of like reuniting with long-lost kin after thinking you were the only inhabitant on Planet Weird. And for me, that’s Paige Krueger. A few months ago I stumbled across her Etsy shop, Dance Sippy Dance, and was greeted by a number of bloodied and bulgey-eyed monsters who seemed utterly delighted to be covered in someone’s innards. I mean, who wouldn’t be, right?

An artist based out of Calgary, Alberta (proudly waving my red and white), Krueger paints on anything: canvases, wood, dirt, appliances … but it was her work with polymer clay that piqued the interest of my inner sicko. She calls them monsters, plain and simple, and their forms range from boogers to breath mints. I like the pale-looking pylon-types, myself, but her seasonal stuff is also top notch, like the mime, pumpkin thief and suited fellow pictured here.

So what makes this lady tick? “Oh, i wish i had a really interesting answer for this,” she laughs. “I just think it’s funny. Like when you’re in grade school and draw a wiener on the skeleton in the science text book. I would say having a laugh is what makes me tick.”

A self-proclaimed hermit an’ proud, Krueger used to collect corkscrews and yo-yos (’cause those go hand-in-hand). But now that she’s famous, her tastes have evolved to hoarding art supplies and following the works of Yue Minjun, Michael Hussar and Gary Baseman.

If you’re in the mood for some good ol’ fashioned gore this Halloween, be sure to pay this lady a visit. She does the blood thing all year round, too, which is a bonus. She also does E-rated monsters if that’s more your jam.

The snaps here are of my recent acquisitions, but there’s plenty more to see in her shop and via her social media accounts. Check her out!

Say Hello to Sawdust Bear

We know her as Shing but most know her as Sawdust Bear. You may know her name from a convention, seen her web comic, laughed at a her fun message board posts, or gazed at some of her art in a gallery.  She has her paint soaked hands all over it seems.

Now Shing is an awesome lady! I had the pleasure of meeting her in person for the first time this past year at SDCC and was greeted with possibly the most pressurized hug I have ever experienced! I was warned by Ryniak that she gives intense hugs, but I was not prepared for that much enthusiasm! It was very comforting actually since I had the energy of a herd of turtles in the middle of the convention.  I can’t forget she owed me a juicebox and paid up. She exudes excitement which shows in her work.

Sawdust Bear is known for her illustrations and sculpts creating creatures that science typically doesn’t focus on, or as she puts it “My sculptures are rooted in the ideas of bad science, historical hoaxes and cabinets of curiosities.” Usually utilizing clay, wood, and glass for her sculpts, but she also ventures out into metals and canvases for painting. Many of the creatures she creates have distinct facial expressions, tentacles, buggy eyes, round bellies, and a face anyone would love. Honestly, the facial expressions will draw you in. Some look like they ate way too much pizza buffet and some look like they are pouting over not enough lego pieces. They may even make you want to rub their belly. We love all her creations.

If you would like to see more of Sawdust Bear, please visit her site and also you can see her in Stranger Factory’s “Subterrane” Group Sculpture Exhibit.

These May Be Cute but Not Suitable for Children, The Seedlings

  • by

As I am looking at these images to post, my colleague walks by and says “Those are cute seedlings”. Well that  just described this post! Taylored Curiosities aren’t making monster embryos this time, but Seedlings.
As described:
Seedlings are the tiny creatures that watch over your crops and flowers while they grow, but they are quite shy so you might not have seen them before.

These are my second fully sculpted toy design and are hand cast from an original sculpt with a hand sewn felt and wool sprout growing out of their heads. Slight differences will occur between Seedlings as they are entirely hand produced. Each is accompanied by an individually wrapped packet of seeds for you to plant.

These little creatures stand at 2cm from head to toe (not including sprout; which takes them up to approx 5cm) and are collectible, resin, figures. These are not suitable for children.”

The Seedlings can be found now at the store.

Behold the Paper Sculptures of Sher Christopher

  • by

The only thing I can do with paper is sort of write on it and get paper cuts, but Sher Christopher knows how to take it to one of the most supreme levels with her sculptures.

Using the paper as a “permanent sculptural medium”, Sher uses her BA in three dimensional design from the University of Wolverhampton to it’s most proper use. Looking at this amazing work, you might think she has other materials besides paper used, but each sculpture uses only paper that is gathered from various places around the world. Her gallery is simply stunning to look and makes me not look the same at the paper on my desk now.

Cardboard Animals Oh My!

  • by

A while ago I was at a friend’s place and saw this odd little cardboard deer on the wall that had me intrigued. I have seen all kinds of cardboard art, animals, and so on, but this had my attention. My friend wasn’t much help on where she got it, but thanks to google and the 10 minutes I had to spare, I now know that Cardboard Safari out of Charlottesville,Virginia is the culprit. Utilizing local business, recyclable, and non toxic material these sustainable creations go from nice faux wall mounts to the size of a small dog. You wont see the haunting taxidermy eyes in the deer wall mounts but an easily snapped together laser cut imitation of a majestic animal.Their catalog of goods isn’t only animals but rocket ships, wreaths, and more. Seriously, the skull is sweet and that rhino is awesome.
