Fairy Tales of Fear: Rich Klink’s ‘The Sweetling’ for Bewitching II

  • by

Foolhardy sweet tooths, prepare for an untimely sayonara because The Sweetling is out to smite ya good! This devious character from Cleveland-based artist Rich Klink trolls the night in search of victims to lure in with his old bucket of candy, only to bludgeon and kidnap them! Lord knows what he does with the bodies … maybe he leaves them in a ditch to rot, or drags them back to his forest hideaway. What if there are more of them? Are they cannibals?! What if they boil us alive and use our skin as hats?! No one has ever lived to tell of it …

Attributing his aesthetic to “an early fascination with Santa Claus and his toy-making elves,” Klink’s work depicts a fairy tale world stripped of its sugar; a nightmare you cannot wake up from. Fables how they were meant to look and be told, essentially. Be wary of wandering at night, Albuquerque friends … rumor is he’s bound for the southwest for Bewitching II next month …

Behind the Scenes of Le Carnaval: The Opening

By sethsabbat

After a busy first day setting up, Madelon and I met the CP team at Artoyz around noon on Thursday, where props were put in place, and final touches made in the set up of the show. With a few hours to spare before the show started, we headed over to the Louvre. Travis was on a mission to see a painting he missed on his last trip to Paris, so we roamed the halls in search of it.  Thankfully, Teodoru’s map reading skills were better than mine, and after passing the likes of the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo, we soon found it:

Afterwards, we strolled through the Tuileries gardens and stopped for lunch before heading back to Artoyz. With less than an hour before opening, a final check was made. Then bam, the doors opened and that place filled up quick. The Artoyz staff were surprised at how quickly the pieces sold; it was a full house and great success. Madelon and I then left the CP crew to have some late-night dining with Artoyz. We had to be be up early as her train was leaving Paris at 6:25am.

Will We Finally See the KAWS Astro Boy?

Remember the legend of the original 13 Kaws’ Astro Boys? Yeah none of us have one either unless I talk Everlast into giving me his. Well, OriginalFake has teased us with some clothing coming out with the Astro Boy image in a new updated pose (seen below). Will this be made into a 3D form and hopefully in more quantity than before? Maybe Kaws is still trying to make up for the horrendous Partners release. I guess we will all know whats up soon or if it is even legit.

New Works in Progress by Kathie Olivas for ‘Haunted’ @ AFA NYC 10.20

  • by

Kathie Olivas will have a number of fairly large and ambitious sculpts as part of her solo exhibition, Haunted, at AFA NYC next month. With the opening just a few weeks away, these pieces will start to emerge from the shadows as they ready for their journey to the Big Apple. Some are nearly complete, others are still a work in progress. Regardless, hang on to your jaw because we haven’t seen this volume of work or level of complexity from KO alone in one place, ever. (Really.)

Haunted opens Oct. 20th at AFA NYC with a reception from 7pm to 9pm. Kathie will be in attendance, so stop in for some inspiration and a cocktail.

Space Invader Goes Under the Sea with Jason deCaires Taylor

  • by

I have seen Space Invader pieces while walking around London, France, and around San Diego where I went on a mini quest to find them during SDCC, but now he has gone to depths I may never get to. Teamed up with a helping hand and scuba from Jason deCaires Taylor, Invader’s well known tile work is now on the ocean floor off of Cancun. The iconic little invaders are affixed tag team style with Taylor’s underwater sculptures that shows the lengths to which the Invader invasion goes. A perfect match of artists it seems.

I am starting to think Mordor and Hoth will be added to the Invader list soon.

“The Last Supper”, Giles Walker’s Animated Installation

  • by

The Last Supper,” is at Corey Helford Gallery’s Special Exhibition Space in Culver City until September 22. A beautifully portrayed robotic reenactment of the last supper by Giles Walker. This amazing animation installation can be seen at 3521 Helms Avenue in Culver City. From all accounts I have heard, it is a must to see this in person since the video does not do the show justice, and tickets are available here.
