Calliope Jackalope: An Anatomy, Pt. III

  • by

Previously on Calliope Jackalope, An Anatomy, Pt. II: Our little lady is assessed by Obitsu and it’s determined that the figure would require five molds. The wax master is sculpted, the metal molds are forged and the first Calliope test figure is born. Now: we add a splash of color.

With the test figures pulled and green-lighted by KO, it was time to bust out the Pantones and whip up a paint master for the factory to replicate. For her debut Calliope, Kathie chose a soft robin’s egg blue:

At a glance, Calliope’s paint finish seems relatively simple; buuuut … that definitely is not the case. The spray mask alone had to be applied three times more than that of Stingy Jack’s. The figure has a total of eight masks: propeller, face, broken antlers, whites of the eyes, the pupils, lips/cheeks, belly and zipper. The lips and cheeks were the most tedious as they had to be airbrushed by hand to create a realistic ‘rosiness’.

Up next, we take a look at the completed Calliope Jackalope in all her glory. Stay tuned!

Behind the Scenes of Le Carnaval: Set-Up Day

By sethsabbat

Following a week of set-up and sight-seeing, of wining and dining, the Circus has packed up and returned back to their respective homes in the US. Fortunately for us, the memories are just beginning as the pictures and stories start to unfold. Since so many of us experienced this exhibition in spirit, fellow CP boadies Daniel (sethsabbat) and Madelon (LadyMadeline) were gracious enough to document the event, from rehearsal to curtain. To kick things off, Daniel gives us a quick recount of set up day, complete with photos of the packing peanut party. Enjoy!

I met Brandt, Kathie, Travis and Teodoru outside Artoyz Wednesday afternoon after work. I’ll be honest, I felt a bit like a stalker going up to them and saying hello; we hadn’t really set a rendezvous and I wanted to drop some maps off for them. They were killing some time, waiting for some paint to dry in the gallery, so I took them down the rue Saint Honore to check out Colette (a concept store; the dunny series was based on this place), and we then headed back to Artoyz where we found Madelon.

Brandt invited us to hang out as they opened up boxes to inspect the art. Happily, there were no drastic accidents in shipping.  After unpacking, the CP team then began placing the pieces and wiring the wall hangings. I was so amazed to see all the work they did for this show. Kathie and Brandt were looking for some risers, so I suggested they stop by my house to see if there was anything they could use.

Having done all that they could for the day, we headed out, down the rue de Rivoli, with a quick stop at BHV to pick up some epoxy and have a look at the Hotel de Ville. From there, we headed back to my place to pick out props and sample some wine and cheese. Marc had them laughing: he’s a true minimalist (before I moved in), and pretty much begged them to stop producing so much stuff. As we were heading out to eat and decided to bring some of the props, Marc was like, “Please, take more!”

Hit the jump for more photos from Day 1!

We All Could Use Some Urban Camouflage

  • by

I have always been a fan of urban camouflage. I am more inclined to like the scene in Garden State more than the Ali G version. It seems a UK channel called Really  hired artist Carolyn Roper to help promote the TV show Covert Affairs (on the USA network over in the states). Roper turned a few willing models into backdrops of common scenes around London. You can see/not see these ladies at a vegetable market, on a bus, or waiting alongside a cab. Pieces like this always amaze me and keeps me on the lookout.

NYCC Updates for Your Datebook

  • by

It is Con Season! Well, actually it is just a very busy season in general. There is so much good stuff going on that it is hard to keep it all straight, but we will try to keep things flowing.

Here are a few NYCC updates

UME Toys is planning to make a big splash at NYCC with the debut release of their resin piece Dita. UME is also bringing the limited 5 piece edition of DEE-DEE. Dita will be available at the Tenacious Toys booth while little DEE-DEE will be at Big Kev’s Geek Stuff Booth.

The flavors keep coming for Ice Scream Man! I think he is trying to be in that book of world records for flavors. This time around Brutherford Industries brings Green Tea, Red Bean, and Black Sesame to the spectrum. Get them as a set for$52 or one for $20. Only 50 sets. Also, Brutherford Industries signing at the mph booth on Friday at 12pm!

Erick Scarecrow gave us this teaser of PS-BOT too. Maybe more info in the coming weeks. We do know he will be releasing at his booth #3015 the Purple Lust Edition of Kissaki.

Destination DesignerCon: Part One

DesignerCon is about six weeks away, and we will bringing you up to date info on what you can expect to see at this festival of fun. The dynamic duo of  Jason Limon and  Jeremiah Ketner  will be splitting a booth at the con, and Jason has been giving us a glimpse into what he will be bringing. Like he did at SDCC, Jason will have a smaller sized and price efficient figure that will easily be another sellout. He has been showing us a few work in progress shots of the piece, and it is looking fantastic! It will be a perfect companion to the little Ollie and Cyolo or any Limon piece actually. As November gets closer, the more stoked we will all get.

More updates soon, so keep checking back.

Here, Kitty Kitty … FERG’s Mini Misfortune Cats Drop This Week!

  • by

Unleashing this week from the Playge bastion is FERG’s long-awaited A Little Misfortune series, due to ambush retailers and afflict us with their curse at any time now. The debut blind box series features 16 designs with five chases and one secret chase. And from the looks of this snap, FERG is in perfect form with slick color combos, GID action and killer QC, especially for 2.5″ figures. Surprised? Me neither. Available as singles and cases of 25, the killer kitties will be around 10 bucks a box. Good fortune to you …

Monster Toytem by Gary Ham this October

  • by

We saw this a while ago and we were hoping for an SDCC release but things happen. But ready for Halloween, the Monster Toytem is finally coming!  Gary announced a pre order right now for this fun monster mash.

The Monster Toytem is a stackable and interchangeable 7 piece vinyl toy set. Each piece is 2″ tall and when you put them all together this beast is 14″ tall. (I do not suggest letting it do battle with Devastator)
And if you want, gary will sign Individual pieces and or the box upon request.

Pre order can be found here.

NYCC 2012 Pre Release of Chester Runcorn: Gin & Tonic Edition

  • by

The news will be coming in bit by bit as NYCC 2012 approaches, and My Plastic Heart has just announced that they will be have a pre release of the Gin & Tonic edition of Dok A’s Chester Runcorn. The new colorway that goes along with the previous Port, Stout and Absinthe editions will be $64.99 at the myplasticheart booth #3313 during all of NYCC 2012. The man himself, Dok A will be graciously signing Chester Runcorn at the booth on Saturday, October 13 at 4:00pm. NYCC runs October 11-14.

Ernest Longfellow by Doktor A

Doktor A’s solo show “A Postcard from New Yorkshire” at My Plastic Heart will be here before we know it, and the Dok was gracious enough to show us one of only two custom toys in the show, Ernest Longfellow (Customized Badbot by Three A).

Ernest desires precision in all things. He is always dressed immaculately in the finest tailored clothes. His knowledge is wide, his taste impeccable. His speech is precise and his timing punctual. All in all is he quite unbearable.

This without a doubt shows that Dok is exceeding his own work with every single piece he puts out.  Pretty soon he will have pure artificial intelligence in these robots. Oh and did I mention Mr. Longfellow here has a working miniature pocket watch?

The show opens on Friday, October 12 from 7 – 10pm.
