This Year, Ryniak’s Going BIG!

  • by

Real big. And with quite a few of his pieces, actually. Unfortunately, Chris’ camera skills still need a bit of work and his hand got in the frame. Or maybe the critter wouldn’t hold still (I can only imagine the ruckus in his studio when he brings home a box of doughnuts). I guess a full reveal will have to wait … but I’m digging the candy stripes!

Monsters & Misfits opens April 13th!

What Happens When You Steal a Bubblegut’s Ice Cream

You have to hand it to Chris Ryniak for his mastery of the tragicomical. I mean, this is ridiculous: this guy’s pout is so deep that his chin and forehead probably hurt, while for us it’s our guts from laughing. This is the freestanding Bubblegut we first glimpsed a few weeks back, and what’s funny is that his gut was so big that Chris had to shave some of it off. Poor little beast … I wonder when he last saw his toes. Anyway, we’ll see this fella with all of his friends at Monsters & Misfits II in Japan. Exhibition kicks off April 13th!

Chris Ryniak’s ‘Dainty Nibbler’ Hams it up for the Camera

Just a disclaimer: this is my favorite sculpture ever from Chris Ryniak, so the paragraph to follow will be nothing more than me fighting to translate my drool into words. Even the twisted lollipop is freaking genius. We first met the Dainty Nibbler as a sketch back in December. Two months later, his dopey grin was the first of many sculpts for Monsters & Misfits II in Japan.

And now here he is in all his glory. The palette, the expression, the impeccable attention to detail, his gleaming eyes … I’m honestly beside myself, over here. The level of quality we’ve seen in this show is nothing short of awesome . And so as to not be rude, the guy in the background is also looking charming as ever as he gnaws away on his cantler. Forget swooning, I’ve damn well fallen over.

Monsters & Misfits II is a CP group exhibition featuring new works from CMR, Amanda Louise Spayd, Brandt Peters, Kathie Olivas and Doktor A. The show opens April 13th at the Kusakabe Folk Museum in Takayama, Japan.

More M&MII WIPs from CMR!

Ryniak’s roll continues with a whole whack of new progress pics for Monsters & Misfits II. It’s like Candy Land over there! It appears we have another custom Octopus Girl in the works, along with a Lizzie and soft serve Bubblegut (click for full frontal), some Cuspid Skelve dentata, and a new detail shot of this fella. Always a treat watching these take shape. More pics through the click!

Custom Octopus Girl from Chris Ryniak for M&MII

Aww. We’ve got another heartbreaker on our hands here from Chris Ryniak for Monsters & Misfits II. Believe it or not, this was an Octopus Girl at one point (which was a KO Elizabeth … yes: a custom that was editioned and then customized again. Crazy!), and it seems she’s acquired a set of Bubblegut feet. The eyes on this one knocks my socks off; I’m always amazed at the amount of life they imbue that I half expect her to blink. And do her moles remind anyone else of Cadbury Mini Eggs?

Anyone?

CMR’s Year of the Dragon Snybora Drops Friday!

  • by

Alright, so 2012 might mark the end of the world on the Mayan calendar, but I see no reason to stop huntin’ for the grails. And besides, it’s also the Year of the Dragon on the Chinese calendar (which sounds far more optimistic) so let’s focus on that!

Available this Friday, March 2nd, is the Year of the Dragon Snybora from Chris Ryniak and Squibbles Ink + Rotofugi. The black vinyl Lake Monster is embellished with stunning-yet-subtle gold, red and matte black accents and has a beautiful set of glossy black eyes. Lovingly hand-painted by Joe Somers (Squibbles) and Kirby Kerr (Rotofugi), no two are exactly alike. He stands a mighty 3.5 inches and will be scampering about the Rotofugi shop at 11am. $35 and he’s yours! More beauty shots below!

The Critter Carousing Continues!

  • by

Whoa, Chris Ryniak is on a tear right now. Surely the ping pong table is getting crowded and here’s hoping it doesn’t collapse from all that critter chub!

These are all works in progress for Monsters & Misfits II … above we have an update on the Dainty Nibbler-inspired sculpt, with a full reveals in the background of the Cantler Eater, a custom Lizzie and Bubblegut: the former looking like she’s melting while B’gut is looking to be of a soft-serve variety (I dunno, I’m having ice cream fever over here). Curious what becomes of that Boo Skelve

Next is a horde of custom Bubbleguts lounging around below. CMR performed an engineering miracle and discovered how to make one stand on two legs. And on this day, Bubblegut’s bubblegut was fully realized by everyone in the land. Holy moly, phear the massness!

Something’s Afoot with Chris Ryniak …

  • by

Or rather: he haz a foot! Chris revealed these pudgy little digits a couple days ago via his Twitter account. They happen to belong to a one-off, sweet-toothed critter called the Cantler Eater, who’s part of the Monsters & Misfits II exhibition in Japan.

What is a Cantler you ask? Chris says: An antler made of candy :D

His daily sketch for today illustrates a similar concept (below). The creature that the foot belongs to will look a bit different, but the candy cravings are consistent among them. Cuteness everywhere!

Padlock the Pantry!! The Nibbler is Coming!

  • by

Watching a piece of art evolve from simple sketch or sculpture to something whole and ‘animate’ is one of my favourite things to behold. I’m a lover of processes and when it’s a show of this scale (we’re talkin’ Monsters & Misfits II) — with many artists working synchronously on the same project — there’s new gifts awaiting our eyes almost daily.

And this guy is somethin’ else. A variation of his ‘Dainty Nibbler’ sketch from last December (below), Chris Ryniak’s newest beastie is bound to be a show-stopper. Chris has already revealed that he’s quite the big boy at 19 inches tall, and he is indeed the first and last of his breed. …Give baby a kiss!!!

Monsters & Misfits II opens April 13th at the Kusakabe Folk Museum in Takayama, Japan.
