Brandt Peters- Phantsmenagerie

Pop Surrealist painter and contemporary toy maker, Brandt Peters, presents a collection of new multi-media works born of a year of isolation, reflection, and wonder. Dozens of odd characters inspired by the parallel storylines of depression era animated characters combined with the growing  anxiety of an uncertain future in an uncertain world. He combines vintage found objects with timeless avatars into hand made “toys” and assemblages that tell stories of resilience and optimism.
Brandt Peters emerged from the entertainment industry into an internationally recognized and accomplished fine artist, designer, and producer. Often known for his award winning toy designs, Peters is also a mixed media painter and story-teller who centers his work on character design and visual development. His work hearkens back to the earliest days of comics and animation, with a seeming simplicity that hides layers of intricate back story rooted in humor and a strong, empowering narrative voice. He is one of original founders of Circus Posterus and Stranger Factory gallery and pre-pandemic, worked as an Art Director for Meow Wolf.

Phil Noto- Phil Noto New works 2021

Contemporary narrative artist, Phil Noto, presents new acrylic paintings of his favorite subject matter, the female muse. Strong, confident  faces encouraging the viewer to enjoy life’s pleasures in bold, striking colors and minimalist text that serve as mysterious mantras and secrets soon to be revealed.

Phil Noto is an Eisner nominated American painter, comic book/ concept artist who is known for his work on such titles as Black WidowJonah HexUncanny X-Force,and most recently Star Wars (Chewbacca and Shattered Empire). After a 10 year career at Disney Feature Animation, he started to work full-time as an artist for Marvel, DC, Image Comics and Dark Horse, and as well, time in gaming working on such blockbuster hits such as Bioshock. Phil Noto has been a prominent featured artist at Stranger Factory since its opening in 2011.

Carry Me is a show about love. As a parent of two (and soon to be three), Eric Althin, AKA Sad Salesman, has heard the phrase “Carry me!” more than his aging back would like. He has come to understand that it is not just about the literal act of carrying someone, it’s about what we do for those we love and the support we get in return. Everyone needs to be carried at some point in their life and this show helps us celebrate the act.

Sad Salesman, is a Brooklyn based artist and character designer. Eric has been customizing vinyl toys since 2004, and launched his own toy brand ‘Sad Salesman’ in 2017. Prior, he was the co-founder and curator at Bold Hype Gallery. He has also created numerous characters for mobile games and showcases his original sculptures in various exhibitions across the US. In 2018 Eric won the Designer Toy Award for breakthrough artist of the year.

Contemporary narrative artists, Phil Noto and Brandt Peters are joining forces to create a 2 person exhibition focused on empowered portraits of the strange, the unusual, and the eccentric.

Phil Noto is an Eisner nominated American painter, comic book/ concept artist who is known for his work on such titles as Black Widow, Jonah Hex, Uncanny X-Force, and most recently Star Wars (Chewbacca and Shattered Empire). After a 10 year career at Disney Feature Animation, he started to work full-time as an artist for Marvel, DC, Image Comics and Dark Horse, and as well, time in gaming working on such blockbuster hits such as Bioshock. While most of his commercial work is done digitally, Noto works in traditional acrylic painting for his fine art works that focus on contemporary character portraits of iconic empowered women that teeter into superheroes and villainous archetypes.

Brandt Peters emerged from the entertainment industry into an internationally recognized and accomplished fine artist, designer, and producer. Often known for his award winning toy designs, Peters is also a mixed media painter and story-teller who centers his work on character design and visual development. 2-Person exhibition of new work by Mudmonkey & Calan Ree
September 1 – October 1, 2017
Opening reception, September 1, 6-9 pm

In the project room, ceramicists Simon Boses and Calan Ree present new character driven works exploring nature’s role in inspiring mythology and personifying its elements.

Simon Boses creates an ongoing mythology through ceramic narrative figures. His myth is influenced by the events of his life, often drawing upon threads of common human experience. Simon’s creations have a surface meaning that is easy to recognize. Further investigation reveals the use of a library of symbols developed over a lifetime to layer ideas into the physical form. Allowing a deeper, subtler symbolism in the piece.

Calan Ree creates contemporary ceramic and mixed media figurative sculpture. Clay is her first true love, so even when working in bone or metal, there is more often than not, ceramic binding the elements together. She finds the natural world just as intriguing as the folk lore that tries to explain it. Her work is figurative in nature and often expresses the hidden spirit that resides within the subject.

Phil Noto’s “Silent Frequency” this April at Stranger Factory!

Stranger Factory is thrilled to present a new exhibit in April from returning artist Phil Noto!

Silent Frequency finds Noto’s signature style in top form, as the artist brings beautiful new paintings to life, comprised of soft dream-like portraits juxtapozed with bold graphic elements and typography. This newest body of work hints at sci-fi, transporting the viewer further into the artist’s future vision often playing with modern advertising illustration techniques, with nods to classic pulp cinema posters, and silver age sci-fi novels. Covers to books yet to be written, posters to films yet to be; Noto’s master paintings are portraits of future protagonists with secret pasts, often portraying subtle expressions that few artists are capable of capturing, drawing us further and further in to his continued narrative.

Silent Frequency” opens Friday April 1st, from 6-9 pm with a reception open to the public.

Silent Frequency will remain on display until May 1st.
