This isn’t the Shai Hulud ride? MMIII

  • by

Recently, we brought you this dandy of a “work in progress” image from Brandt Peters and Kathie Olivas that led us all a twitter with excitement.
hard at work 2Speculation grew – a pumpkin greeter Skelve? Pumpkin lanterns? Now, we can put all the guesses  to rest because we have a finished design!

I thought I was riding Shai HuludKathie and Brandt  have created a truly magical piece for Monsters & Misfits IIIThat amazing pumpkin head threw us all a curve ball, because the proud noggin sits atop a lovely collared double-breasted coat worn by Kathie’s “Elizabeth”.

We all know proper parade participants must look dapper, so a very chimney like top hat is perched on our pumpkin friend’s head. But – what perfectly accentuates this gent is his choice of travel. To get him through the parade route, he is accompanied by a glorious segmented worm with numerous folds and a proud smile.  Hands down, this is awesome!

The gloves are off with the artists because Monsters & Misfits III is less than a month away!

Chris Ryniak’s Monster Spirits

  • by

Chris Ryniak’s brain is a limitless fountain of monster making ingenuity, and the recent appearance of a happy little lumpy idol on his Instagram feed made us all squeal in delight. These brightly coloured little doofuses are all set to wreak havoc and mischief, but we’re likely to forgive them because sitting at just 3.5″ high, they’re just so damn cute.

Despite being busy putting the finishing touches on some creatures for Monsters and Misfits III, and even busier hustling the others into shipping crates, Chris took the time to answer a few questions about these little Monster Spirits, and his upcoming trip to Japan!

Borbogule: Monster Spirit of Mischief

Borbogule: Monster Spirit of Mischief

CP: What’s your point of inspiration for these little monster spirits?
CMR: My creatures are inherently invisible to humans, so it only makes sense that something exists that is invisible to them.

The Nuggleworts carry effigies of them on their heads to celebrate mischief and fun in the night parade.

CP: Besides Mischief, what other spirits do you have lined up?
CMR: I hadn’t thought that far ahead, you may have just given me an idea!

What are you looking forward to the most on your return trip to Japan?
CMR: Besides the food? The time worn architecture and strong sense of culture. Oh, and MANNERS, everyone is so polite!

What was your favourite experience the first time?
CMR: There were so many amazing experiences the first time, some of which took me by surprise.

We followed the Spring festival parade at night down a quiet street, when all of the Yatai floats stopped moving and everyone, including the crowd, started singing in unison.  It was haunting and beautiful, like something from another world.

Your larger sculptures are jawdropping. Will we be seeing more of those in the future; are you finding yourself drawn to larger formats?
CMR: THANKS! I have always wanted to work big…like BIG big, like 20-feet-tall big!  Working large has some real challenges and limitations, but it’s something I plan on doing periodically in the future.

Until someone offers a room with 20-foot ceilings and a cargo truck, I may have to keep the pieces between 3 and 4 feet high.

Monsters & Misfits Monday: No sleep

  • by

All the artists for Monsters & Misfits III are getting little to no rest since the big event is only a month away, and burning the midnight oil is an understatement. Talking to Amanda Louise Spayd yesterday, she thinks “I will sleep in October.” I had to point out that likely won’t happen since we still have Designercon in November.

This brings us to this week’s edition of Monsters & Misfits Monday! We thought we would show you the work spaces of the artists, and show you just exactly what they are doing these long busy days and nights.

WIP by Andrew Bell for Monsters & Misfits III

  • by

Bell MMIIIAndrew Bell is going to Japan for Monsters & Misfits III with the Circus Posterus hooligans, and we have some developing work by his awesome self. This toothy looking glob is well on its way to being a creature straight from Andrew’s head! Still in its very early stages, it seems like a bellybutton is even going to make an appearance (an inny too) with an ice cream coned swirled noggin. We will keep everyone updated on more work when we get tidbits here and there, but we can already tell you that this show will blow you out of the water like Godzilla doing a belly flop!!!

Things are getting big for Monsters and Misfits III

  • by

m7m3_slideSeptember will be here in the blink of an eye, and we have been keeping tabs on what the Circus Posterus artists and invited guests have been up to for Monsters & Misfits III.

I don’t think the crew had the old saying “go big or go home” in mind with this show, because I don’t think many of them would want to go back home…so they are just going big! From the looks of it, Brandt is in the process of making an epic sized white whale…scratch that – an epic size narwhal named Mortimer. Ryniak on the other hand, has taken to creating a beast so large his son could ride it to school! Don’t worry, these guys will create amazing work in all shapes and sizes, and not just miniature pony sizes.

The Monsters and our team of Misfits head over to Japan this September, and we will be keeping you up to date, as all the amazing pieces come to life!

Colin Christian’s Modtopus

  • by

colin_Modtopus_b

We have been tormented for weeks seeing the development of Colin Christian’s sculpts for his show opening this Friday at Stranger Factory. We’ve been particularly fond of this sci-fi vixen with tentacle hair, and now we finally get to see her in all her finished glory.

Named Modtopus, she’s actually more sultry and stunning than we could have imagined! Adorned with darkened black eyes, full lips, shining tentacles, and a gaze that screams “Barbarella flashback!”, this 15″ wall mount is simply gorgeous.

Modtopus, along with more amazing pieces from Colin, will be at his exhibit. The show runs July 5th – July 28th, with an opening reception on Friday, July 5th from 6 – 9 PM at Stranger Factory.

You have waited over a year, now get ready, because Monsters & Misfits III is coming back this September to Takayama, Japan!

We’ll have more news coming soon, but we have a few new artists joining in the fun, and we can’t wait to show you what our artists have been cooking up for you!

More progress shots from Colin Christian

CC

Oh hey, we have more progress images from Colin Christian! He’s been busy preparing for the opening at Stranger Factory next week, and some of these new sculpts above are brand spanking new to us. If you haven’t noticed, Colin has an affinity for sci-fi and hyper sexualized beautiful vixens, and these ladies are classic Colin Christian.

The size of the face on the right has us very intrigued….are we talking womp rat or Serenity sized here?

CC1Last week, we had a post on a tentacle creation from Colin, and this week, she might have a partner in intergalactic exploits. This yellow version has almost the same structure but maintains slight differences in paint and helmet style. It looks like more tentacles will be added shortly, and we still haven’t seen the beauty under the mask yet. We cannot wait to see the rest of Colin’s show, and we’ll be keeping you updated!

Colin’s exhibit along with Phil Noto and Glenn Barr runs July 5th – July 28th, with an opening reception on Friday, July 5th from 6 – 9 PM at Stranger Factory.

Colin Christian brings on the tentacles

  • by

CC3With the July opening right around the corner, progress images are pouring in from Colin Christian, Phil Noto, and Glenn Barr for their shows at Stranger Factory!

With the above work in progress picture, I would say Colin Christian is channeling the original Battlestar Galactica, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, and Cthulhu all at the same time because this piece is stellar! The Sci-Fi feel of this sculpt is going to appeal to many of us, from the classic space travel styled helmet to the tentacles flowing below the chin like locks of medusa hair. We can also surmise that under that tissue paper, is a majestic and beautiful female face, as per Colin’s tradition. Once this piece is done, we’ll be trying to show off the finished version because this is looking fantastic even in the early stage!

Colin’s exhibit along with Phil Noto and Glenn Barr runs July 5th – July 28th, with an opening reception on Friday, July 5th from 6 – 9 PM at Stranger Factory.

Colin Christian Shares a Work in Progress for July

Coming July 5th to Stranger Factory,  is a trio of terrific titillation with new works by Colin Christian, Glenn Barr, and Phil Noto. Before the exhibition opens though, we have to show you what the artists are working on.

Colin has been giving us updates from his power tool adorned studio with some of the sculpts he is  creating and as always, they are thriving with sexuality and pop culture flare. Still in early stages, this lovely lady is already taking shape with perfect lips and eyelashes that could cut a man in two. We can’t wait to see her gorgeous face evolve.

Colin’s exhibit along with Phil Noto and Glenn Barr runs July 5th – July 28th, with an opening reception on Friday, July 5th from 6 – 9 PM at Stranger Factory.
