The Stunning Skills of Yosiell Lorenzo

  • by

If one of your usual haunts is the Circus Posterus world, then you have seen the name or work here and there of Yosiell LorenzoActually, if you look closely, you will see some of Yosiell’s work in collection shots of CP board members, but for those that haven’t been exposed to his world, I am here to help.

Yosiell, pronounced “Joe-See-Ell”, is a Puerto Rican artist raised in Connecticut. Best known for his amazing sculpture series known as “Sicklings”, one could easily see the skills this man posses. The sicklings are a nice 3D representation of Frustration, loneliness, despair, and so on. Their downtrodden slouch and sullen eyes easily can represent us all on our must harsh days. It doesn’t stop there, Yosiell also knows his way around  paintings, ink, graphite, and more. Recently, his line of prints have been a hot commodity and becoming instant classics.

We can’t wait to see what Yosiell has in store when he brings some of  his new creations to  Stranger Factory’s “Subterrane” group sculpture exhibit coming Nov. 9.

Destination Designer Con: Sawdust Bear

  • by

Holy Shai Hulud Batman! We just talked about Sawdust Bear the other day, and now we get the scoop on her Designer Con goods.

Above we have the Fatty Bugs! Living up to their name, they are fat and round!

“They all have slightly different faces, although they’ll generally fall into one of the following categories – “I’m HUNGRY!”, “I’ve eaten too much, but I’m still hungry” or “Why won’t you feed me, I’m hungry?”.”

There probably wont be more than 5 of each color of these plump beasties. The price will be around $40, with a wood base, although there will also be some variants in the $30 range. It looks like if they roll over on their back, they are pretty much screwed on rolling back over.

Now we have the Gravebeast plaques. Their facial expressions are awesome, and I think the dude on the far left is mocking me while the middle one cant believe the mocking. The far right gravebeast  seems to be pondering how to get my tofu sandwich without me knowing.

“No one has ever seen the back half of a gravebeast. These specimens were modeled after notes and sketches by a grave robber and amateur painter. These gravebeasts share the same body type, but are customized to be one of a kind.” They’ll be priced under $100.

What is this? Looks familiar. Wait it is, Rockfiends by sawdustbear x fplus!

Shing best details this piece for Designer Con:

” I’ve been constantly impressed with Josh’s painting and customizing skills, so when he mentioned he’d like to paint a larm or five, I was all HELL YEAH. We traded a batch of sculpts with each other, and I’ve been slowly turning his fungal fiend sculpts(previously seen with his awesome “The Corrupter” figures) into critters that would live in my world as rock fiends.”

Only a tad over 3 weeks away until Pasadena gets hits with all are excited faces and broke wallets!

The Meticulous Makings of Miss Monster

  • by

She has a love for monsters, a grasp on tentacles, a legendary twitter feed, and seeks refuge with the WWE, she is Miss Monster!

Melita Curphy aka Miss Monster simply put, makes monsters. She even does this full time.Talking to her the past couple years at Dragon*Con, you can see the compassion and vehemence she has for her craft. This was never more obvious than with the costume she endured during Dragon*Con. That was an undertaking! Her nom de plume fits her art perfectly!

Melita, in my opinion, has perfected making dolls and masks. The masks are uncannily amazing and detailed. The dolls she creates are all hand sewn, hand cast, hand painted, and hand amazing. Seriously, these could be creatures you see in Labyrinth or the Dark Crystal scurrying around. Melita doesn’t stop there, she is also well crafted with her paints, design, leather crafting, and printing. She is all over mediums actually.

Check out Miss Monster here, and we are proud to have her in Stranger Factory’s “Subterrane” group sculpture exhibit coming Nov. 9.

Ian the Sewer Creep by our own Mikee Riggs Skates into NYCC

  • by

Big CONGRATS to our own Mikee Riggs because he is about to unleash his baby known as Ian the Sewer Creep!

NYCC-goers, consider this your first and only warning to GTFO because NYC is about to get a whole lot scummier. Originally a gang of ragtag punks and skaters who hung around the waste tunnels of Pelican City, a toxic spill turned the defiled Sewer Creeps from no-good hoodlums into no-good mutants! And now, after months of living in dumpsters, skulking the sewers and doing whatever is necessary to survive, Sewer Creep gang leader Ian is taking a step into daylight for the first time ever this weekend as a part of New York Comic Con.

The brain child of rabid Kaiju collector and Stranger Factory’s own Mikee Riggs of Toys Are Sanity, Ian The Sewer Creep is 7in. of sofubi scum! Designed by Riggs and sculpted by Papagrim Toys, Ian will debut in black factory paint and handpaint versions this weekend via the Monster Island Table (#3317). Factory paints are $60, customs TBA.

Good for Mikee! Now everyone go get one or suffer my look of haughty derision.

NYCC takes place Oct. 11-14 at Javits Center in New York City!

One Eyed, One Horned, Flying Purple Wooper Looper

  • by

Ok it doesn’t have one eye or one horn and it doesn’t fly but it is a purple.

You loved this fella at SDCC and swooned at the Bewitching II color and now, the Designer Toy Awards have another exclusive for this happy axolotl. Get ready because it is the clear purple colorway of Gary Ham‘s “Wooper Looper“. Like most releases at this award show it is ultra limited  to only 8 copies and only $60. It seems you will have to pick and choose at the DTA award show because you wont get many of these exclusives.

Say Hello to Sawdust Bear

We know her as Shing but most know her as Sawdust Bear. You may know her name from a convention, seen her web comic, laughed at a her fun message board posts, or gazed at some of her art in a gallery.  She has her paint soaked hands all over it seems.

Now Shing is an awesome lady! I had the pleasure of meeting her in person for the first time this past year at SDCC and was greeted with possibly the most pressurized hug I have ever experienced! I was warned by Ryniak that she gives intense hugs, but I was not prepared for that much enthusiasm! It was very comforting actually since I had the energy of a herd of turtles in the middle of the convention.  I can’t forget she owed me a juicebox and paid up. She exudes excitement which shows in her work.

Sawdust Bear is known for her illustrations and sculpts creating creatures that science typically doesn’t focus on, or as she puts it “My sculptures are rooted in the ideas of bad science, historical hoaxes and cabinets of curiosities.” Usually utilizing clay, wood, and glass for her sculpts, but she also ventures out into metals and canvases for painting. Many of the creatures she creates have distinct facial expressions, tentacles, buggy eyes, round bellies, and a face anyone would love. Honestly, the facial expressions will draw you in. Some look like they ate way too much pizza buffet and some look like they are pouting over not enough lego pieces. They may even make you want to rub their belly. We love all her creations.

If you would like to see more of Sawdust Bear, please visit her site and also you can see her in Stranger Factory’s “Subterrane” Group Sculpture Exhibit.
