Amanda Louise Spayd and her BUMBLE for SDCC and beyond

  • by

Get ready for bad BEE puns
BumbleAmanda Louise Spayd has created quite the buzz when she started teasing the colony with patterns of black and yellow, and now everyone is wide-eyed and salivating for more information. The first edition series in her newly dubbed Dust Bunnies, these colorful creations are known as Bumbles.

Flying in at 11″ tall, Bumbles have a  handpainted resin face, cloth body, and paper-wrapped wire antennae with painted wooden balls on top. Amanda designed the body fabric and then had it professionally printed on a thick, high quality linen-cotton canvas. The little bee ears are made of  wool felt, and the insides of the Bumble are stuffed with aspen wood chips and natural cotton. Amanda has also created brass tags for the numbered editions.

Sweater than honey, each gift boxed Bumble will cost $125 with an edition size between 60-70. They will make their first appearance in her shop this July and then more will swarm in for the CP takeover of Cardboard Spaceship’s booth #5346 at SDCC 2013. Get your F5 fingers ready, and pay attention to the blog for SDCC news or you might get STUNG.

RECAP: ‘The Shape of Art: How Not To Be Square’ Workshop

  • by

One of the best things about opening weekends at Stranger Factory (besides awesome art, delicious doughnuts, and the grinning faces of the Stranger Factory crew) are the fantastic art workshops offered every month. This month, a sculpting and lecture workshop – The Shape of Art: How Not To Be Square – by Valency and Tim Lee, was no exception.

During the workshop, both Valency and Tim discussed their process with developing and working with three dimensional platforms – Valency with her taxidermy mounts, and Tim with his hand cut wood shapes.

Lots of tips and tricks were shared, as well as lots of bad jokes and cookies. In the image below, Katie, the new Stranger Factory assistant, is to the left, sculpting a pretty lacey texture. The lower half of Tim Lee is in the background, discussing his process. Mikee is Mikee.

WANDERING MISFITS: ASH

  • by

AshWandering Misfits are surfacing all over the place it seems! This time around, we get the 3D render for Ash who we have all come to refer to as “Batboy“. It looks as if this defender of the night is taking a break from superhero stuff as he sits back and relaxes for a bit, still wearing his cowl. Ash is part of the Wandering Misfits mini series by Cardboard Spaceship Toys designed by our beloved  Kathie Olivas’ and Brandt Peters’, and sculpted by the talented Scott Wetterschneider of Shinbone Creative., Ash the Batboy will be gracing us very soon, so stay tuned!

RECAP: Tim Lee, Valency Genis and Bob Dob at Stranger Factory

Another month, another opening, but this one was special because Brad and I were there. Just kidding, I’m not that egoistical. Valency Genis and Tim Lee were both present and in rare form, filling the walls with a display of colourful creatures, forest spirits and snarky demons. The gallery itself was buzzing all night, and we entertained visitors and fans from hundreds of miles away!

As usual, the night was accompanied by a custom decorated sugar high, courtesy of Rebel Donuts. Read on for opening images and silly captions!

Phil Noto, Colin Christian and Glenn Barr at Stranger Factory in July!

  • by

July 2013 brings three new exhibits to the Stranger Factory gallery by artists Colin Christian, Glenn Barr, and Phil Noto. Press images and additional artist information are available upon request from our Press Manager, Steve Brown.

Legendary pop surrealism artist Glenn Barr is excited to present a new body of work at Stranger Factory. His paintings channel the bizarre landscapes of a retro future, populated by strong, bold women inspired by 60’s soul singers, comic book heroines, and pinup girls. With his bold strokes and deft use of a minimalistic color palette, Barr’s work is singular amongst his peers.

Comic artist and painter Phil Noto creates some of the most elegant portraits of remarkable women. With a keen eye for the female form and an uncanny ability to paint the most arresting eyes, Noto’s work is captivating. His comic book covers are among the best in the industry, and his gallery work is quickly becoming a favorite among both casual and serious collectors.

Colin Christian is world-renowned for his super-realistic and oversized sculptures. His remarkable masks have been exhibited all over the world, and his enormous full-body sculptures have stolen the show at fairs such as Art Basel Miami. A hyper-sexualized realization of futuristic longing and anime form, Christian’s work is flawless and impossible to look away from.

We hope to see you at Stranger Factory in July!

All three exhibits run July 5th – August 4th, with an opening reception on Friday, July 5th from 6 – 9 PM.

Stan Manoukian’s new “Gork” figure from Unbox Industries

Brand new Circus Posterus member Stan Manoukian, along with Unbox Industries are taunting us  with a new vinyl figure.

Since this is only a teaser, information is slim, but the preliminary name of this new 4-armed  piece is  “Gork”. From the images out there, it looks like this guy has a brain on his back that is screaming for the glow in the dark treatment. Gork, looks like he is at the gym as much as me, but he rocks two huge arms for pounding and two smaller t-rex arms for coffee drinking. I am sure there will be multiple colorways and hopefully – more glowing goodness. Keep an eye on Stan’s site for more hints down the road, but until then, here are a few more images.

Stan will also be showing at Stranger Factory in August, and we definitely have more news on that front coming up soon!
