Sketchbook Showcase!

  • by

We have a new feature that will pop up on the Circus Posterus blog from time to time called SKETCHBOOK SHOWCASE. This little feature will turn the pages of the sketchbooks many of us carry around conventions.

Here, we can gaze at the amazing work many artists do as a thank you for the fans. Some, like myself, just get a simple sketch while others might have a theme, or a larger collaboration from many artists. There are some that even push the boundary of what the artists can do with a specialized book size. There is even one sketchbook of legend that has gained Voldemort stature – we dare not speak its name because what is inside is beyond anything I can imagine for this blog (or my eyes).

For the first initial post, I cracked open my old sketchbook and took a few pictures. I don’t have too many sketches, but for everyone to enjoy, I picked out some of my favorite sketches over the years.

Enjoy!

Mark Powell’s Dioramas will Freak you Out

  • by

A friend of mine sent me an email this week about dioramas. The only time I think of dioramas is on reruns of Community or a commercial for Family Guy, but this opened a whole new world of terror. Melbourne based artists Mark Powell creates frightening images that look like they could be in a Tool video or in a ring of a hell. As he puts it, “I have been working primarily on creating miniature environments where imaginary beings evolve, devolve, consume, excrete, multiply and decay“. Some of the images look as if cenobites had an epic party, especially with the detail he gets with silicon. These may freak me out later, so I will post now.

Skull Paintings by Tom French

  • by

Skulls with hidden imagery are nothing new, but creating some that have more depth seems to be uncommon. Luckily for all of us, Tom French has a way of creating captivating illusions within his skull paintings. Are we seeing a skull or a couple’s interaction in their relationship? The hidden couples or the hidden skull create an astounding effect you can stare at for many moments. I even will say “beautiful imagery.”

Stranger Factory Presents: Circus Annual & Derek Yaniger’s ‘One-Way Ticket to Flipsville’ 12.7

Circus Posterus and Stranger Factory are closing out the 2012 season with a bang with Circus Annual and A One-Way Ticket to Flipsville: two killer exhibitions from the CP gang along with Atlanta’s favorite scribbler, Derek Yaniger.

In keeping the tradition of last year’s Winter Salon, Circus Annual will showcase new works from CP artists and friends at affordable prices just in time for the holidays. This year’s exhibition will feature art from Kathie Olivas, Brandt Peters, Chris Ryniak, Amanda Louise Spayd, Valency Genis, RAGNAR, Phil Noto, Glenn Barr, DrilOne, Leecifer, Yohei Kaneko, and Shigeta Tanaka. Resin editions, custom toys, small originals, prints, apparel and the like will be available, so after all the art lovers are scratched from your list, you’ll still have enough for a little self indulgence. ;)

Joining in the Circus Annual soiree is A One-Way Ticket to Flipsville, a solo exhibit from Derek Yaniger in the gallery’s small projects space. Inspired by cocktail napkin art of the 50s, Yaniger’s retro illustrations are a lively collision of classic cars, cocktail parties and island oases. With more than a dozen new paintings and a bunch of full-colour sketchbook originals planned for the exhibit, Yaniger’s been busy with the paint slinging and we have much to look forward to! So grab your grass skirts and tiki torches, we’re headed to a land full of sun and sand this December!

Circus Annual and A One-Way Ticket to Flipsville open Dec. 7 with a reception from 6 to 9pm. Some of the exhibiting artists will be in attendance!

Josh Keyes’ “Circus and the Sea”

  • by

This past weekend at Roq La Rue, Josh Keyes opened his most recent show “Circus and the Sea“. It appears the show was a huge success as always since all the pieces say sold on them. Loving the circus imagery and sea life. Obviously, you can’t ever go wrong with those.

Cheers to Josh on a great show.

The Original Mr. Bunny by JLED is Back!

  • by

About time we saw Mr. Bunny make a come back! Well, he isn’t the real deal original Mr. Bunny, but a new updated modern 10 inch version. Releasing this Wednesday, Nov. 14, at The Loyal Subjects, this is the second “Chaos Bunny” in the series with the Lava edition being sold at the resent Designer Con. This iconic figure will most definitely make an impact, and there are 4 more versions soon to follow! I am personally loving the new version and larger size!

Random Goodness

  • by

My apologies for not presenting our weekly Sunday endeavor into Random Goodness last week, but I was still in California with Designer Con. Since I am no longer out of pocket, I can properly display interesting things from the interwebs that are a possible delight.

Above, we see the workings of the creative townspeople in  Bideford, Devon, UK, that took it upon themselves to give this poor chestnut tree a “helping hand”. I applaud you good people because this was an awesome thing to do, and brings some flair to the city.

What is this? It looks like a candelabra at a really funky wedding to me, but no, it is actually a living creature. This interesting sea dweller is a sponge! Yeah – a sponge that is in the same family as the thing that mops up some spills in households.  As I said when I was a youngling at the age of 6, “nature is rad!”

For the last random goodness of the week, I leave you with this very tiny cephalopod.

Recap: Circus Posterus @ DesignerCon 2012!

The Circus Posterus caravan is back from DesignerCon and this year was easily the most insane yet! With the launch of the Tomenosuke + CP line of sofubi, new editions, a ton of customs and signing sessions with each of the artists, the booth was nothing short of a hoedown the entire day. Thanks to everyone who braved the crowds and stopped by the booth to say hello; we’ll see you all next year!

Hit the jump for a full photo gallery of the day’s shenanigans!
