The Stunning Skills of Yosiell Lorenzo

  • by

If one of your usual haunts is the Circus Posterus world, then you have seen the name or work here and there of Yosiell LorenzoActually, if you look closely, you will see some of Yosiell’s work in collection shots of CP board members, but for those that haven’t been exposed to his world, I am here to help.

Yosiell, pronounced “Joe-See-Ell”, is a Puerto Rican artist raised in Connecticut. Best known for his amazing sculpture series known as “Sicklings”, one could easily see the skills this man posses. The sicklings are a nice 3D representation of Frustration, loneliness, despair, and so on. Their downtrodden slouch and sullen eyes easily can represent us all on our must harsh days. It doesn’t stop there, Yosiell also knows his way around  paintings, ink, graphite, and more. Recently, his line of prints have been a hot commodity and becoming instant classics.

We can’t wait to see what Yosiell has in store when he brings some of  his new creations to  Stranger Factory’s “Subterrane” group sculpture exhibit coming Nov. 9.

Take a Look into Carisa Swenson’s Goblinfruit Studio

  • by

Goblinfruit Studio is a place where curious creatures and aberrant animals are born, but it is also the home of Carisa Swenson. It is a pleasure to do a post on Carisa. In the many months she and I have been corresponding on social media outlets, she has been abundantly sweet and completely effervescent on doll making.

Carisa is based out of New York city, but you may have seen her in several shows around the country, numerous publications, at the recent Spectrum Fantastic Art live, or even displayed in the Kidrobot NY store. If it isn’t obvious, Carisa is well schooled in doll making having studied under the tutelage of renowned doll maker Wendy Froud. Her creations tend to weave a wonderful back story that are only seen when gazed upon closely. Look into the despondent eyes of “Marcel” as he holds an image of a past love, or the determination in the facial features of the fox in “Kitsune Magic” The character in these creations are a sight to be seen, and the primed execution Carisa outs forth is exceptional.

For more on Carisa and Goblinfruit, visit the site here, and we are proud to have her in Stranger Factory’s “Subterrane” group sculpture exhibit coming Nov. 9.

Won’t You Take Me To Monster Town

  • by

The self taught Ryan Heshka has put down a life of interior design to make fabulous works of art and illustration. His work has appeared in more magazines than I have ever owned and numerous galleries, but now he has a children’s book out in time for Halloween called “Welcome To Monster Town“. This heavily image driven book showcases the daily life of many of our favorite monsters including a brunch serving giant squid. Looks like a great coffee table book and it looks even better for youngsters for Halloween. As listed on his site:

“As soon as the sun sets on Monstertown, creatures of all kinds go to work. So hop on the Ghoul Bus and see for yourself who inhabits this ghoulish town. Dr. Cyclops, Postmaster Skeleton, Frank N. Stein, Dr. Mummy, Captain Witch, and many other monster friends – including a junior monster-in-training – will welcome you with open arms!”

You can find more about it here.

Baby Tattooville 2012: A Recap

  • by

Alright, I’ll be honest: up until this year, I didn’t exactly understand what Baby Tattooville was. From scraps of information I’d gathered in passing online and in conversation, I assumed it was some “secret society” gathering that is closed to the public and was by invite only. And while that isn’t entirely untrue, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it’s something any of us can attend, providing we have the cash to cover the tab.

So what’s Baby Tattooville all about? Who can attend, what’s there to do and where the heck is it? Fellow CP boardie Ron “Thotfulspot” Hollatz attended for the second time this year and was kind enough to give us the full scoop. Read on, be inspired and wish you were there.

By Ron “Thotfulspot” Hollatz

On the first weekend of October, artists and collectors from all over the country gather in Riverside, CA, at the historic Mission Inn. The location is quirky enough that it fits the event perfectly. Everyone gets lost in the maze of courtyards and hallways at least once during the event. It also has areas where there are courtyards with connected conference rooms so you can have multiple things going on at the same time. The event runs from Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon.

To understand Baby Tattooville, you have to forget what you think about any other event. It’s not a con with a lot of art available for sale. It is set up as a weekend where the barrier between artists and collectors disappears and everyone joins in on the fun. Dinner each night is done as a group along with Sunday brunch. When the event starts on Friday, one room is set up as a typical conference room with a raised platform for the artists. The organizer, Bob Self, starts off by saying this will be the only time you will see this formal setting. From that point on, we’re one big group.

This was our second year attending. Last year was overwhelming: for the 5th anniversary, all the previous artists were invited back, and over 30 accepted. This year was a more typical year with about a dozen artists: Coop, Mark Frauenfelder, Gris Grimly, Brandi Milne, Nouar, Kathie Olivas, Nathan Ota, Brandt Peters, Ragnar, Rob Reger and Risk. It’s hard to determine the exact number since some attend as guests, or just pop in for a few hours to join the fun.

As far as collectors/attendees, there are 50 spots available; for an extra charge, a second person can come but they don’t receive the goodies. Each guest receives at least one piece of art from each artist. We also received a “11 X 11″ print with a 5” image from each artist on one sheet, along with a hand drawn image in the center by Gris Grimly, who completed the drawings during the event. A blank 12X12 sheet was also given to each artist for them to do a line drawing that will be provided as a pack for each guest.

A side of Dr. Seuss You Never Knew

  • by

THIS IS ANN…..she drinks blood!

Her full name is Anopheles Mosquito and she’s dying to meet you. Her trade is dishing out MALARIA! If you’ll take a look at the map below you can see where she hangs out.

She can knock you flat so you’re no good to your country, your outfit or yourself. You’ve got the dope, the nets and stuff to lick her if you will USE IT.

Use a little horse sense and you can lick Ann. Get sloppy and careless about her and she’ll bat you down just as surely as a bomb, a bullet or a shell.

The above text is from a WWII booklet educating our armed forces on Malaria (ANN), and the booklet is illustrated by Theodor Seuss Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss. I am not sure if Dr. Seuss did the text since the rhymes aren’t as prevalent, but just the image alone of a mosquito drinking a goblet full of blood is nothing short of amazing. The use of popular culture art, cartoons, and comics were greatly utilized by the government for the war. The covers of World’s Finest comics showing Batman and Superman pushing citizens to buy war bonds are famous, and now seeing Dr. Seuss do an instructional booklet for malaria is equally impressive.

Oddly enough, these tips are still good today, and with the recent development of mosquitoes carrying west nile virus in the states, it doesn’t hurt to know!

Guillermo del Toro visits Doktor A’s solo show at MPH

  • by

We will have more coverage of Dok A’s solo show A Postcard from New Yorkshire at myplasticheart once the good doktor gets home, but for now we have a special treat. You never know who are fans of a person’s work or friends they may have, but at Dok’s opening, Guillermo del Toro stopped by to check it out. Dok and Guillermo have known each other for a bit, but it is always awesome to see the support. You might know Guillermo from his films like Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, and the upcoming Pacific rim, or you may know him from being one of the most awesome and hilarious guys to ever set foot on a SDCC panel! Good to see the meeting of two great minds!

Weekend Weird Web Finds

  • by

It was a weird last couple weeks, but I got busy. This week’s weird web finds are off the chain.

Who couldn’t miss the gigantic eyeball that washed ashore in Pompano Beach, Fla and was picked up by a beachcomber. Now at first I thought it just was a discarded glass eye from Ryniak, but it is probably from a huge fish that fell victim of the fish version of Jason Vorhees.

Now how better to adapt a panda back into the wild but to dress up like a panda during all interactions. I’m sure the panda doesn’t notice any smell differences at all. These panda costumes will probably be huge in NY in a couple seasons.

No this isn’t a Dok A piece with a wicked stache!

Now researchers have found a new spider. This creepy crawly was found in Borneo and has yet to obtain an identity. Now when I was in undergrad learning all my biology stuff, I daydreamed of being a taxonomist. If I was a taxonomist I could name this guy whatever I want, but alas my three years of Latin is not strong enough. Actually, that doesn’t matter since modern taxonomists name species whatever they want including their names or a jab at a fellow researcher. I would name the genus species of this guy “FakeStache Spidermangus”, and it would totally rule!
