Kathie Olivas: For almost three decades, her work has explored society’s insatiable desire to assign ‘cuteness’ and our discomfort with the unknown. A dark blend of early American portraiture set in post apocalyptic times, her paintings and sculptures are a satirical look at how fear affects our sense of reality. Her wide eyed children and anthropomorphic creatures are meant to evoke a nostalgic reaction that reflects isolation and uncertainty, yet they also act as empowered alter egos. While these characters explore their new lonely worlds, they double as our narrators capable of developing their own defense mechanisms. They guide us through their reality as they experience it and yet, even in their company, we are granted no reassurance.
Her current series “Caffeine and Insomnia” is inspired by a year filled with grief and resilience and are meant to be read as a pictorial oracle of divination.
Katherine Walsh (Fearsome Beast): In her current solo feature exhibition at the gallery, Los Angeles based embroidery artist Fearsome Beast (aka Katherine Walsh) will be exhibiting highly detailed embroidered works on fabric panels. The elaborately framed two dimensional works are reminiscent of traditional embroidery with a dark spin.
The obsession with tiny skulls and the macabre obscures the narrative of a historically “feminine” craft. Our newest Fearsome Beast exhibition “The Wild Hunt” contains a highly saturated jewel tone palette filled with meticulously crafted embroidered portraits and narrative landscapes.
Anna Tillett: Anna holds a B.F.A. in Illustration from Memphis College of Art. You can currently find her illustrating her next goofy idea and eating all the pizza in the Beehive State of Utah.
Her work is a humorous take on food and people, and her obsession with turning those people into food. Her iconic portraits of your favorite comfort foods are both surreal and nostalgic in her new solo exhibition “A la Carte”
