Mikee’s Mail Day: Super7 x Secret Base Zombie Fighter!

So to switch things up a bit a this week, I’m actually going into the mail vault to discuss a toy I have a very strong love affair with:

In the picture above stands the awesomeness that is the Zombie Fighter. A collaboration between vinyl toy legends Super7 and Secret Base. This is the most recent collaboration figure the companies have done and is actually the best place to start my rant:

I am a huge fan of the “fight figure” genre of vinyl toys. The fight figure, to me, is the cornerstone of second generation Japanese vinyl toys. If not for the fight figure, Pushead may not still be making toys. If not for the fight figure, Napalm Death may not have a toy at all (which is not a world I’d want to live in). The fight figure is a “must” in any sofubi or kaiju collectors’ collection. Even if you only have one, a fighter is necessary. A good half of my collection is fight figures but I tend to enjoy the classic look and adaptability the fight design offers.

The Zombie Fighter presents a new head and arms on a very familiar fighter body: the same used for most Secret Base fight figures, from the Skull Brain (above) to the Skull Wing, to the Pumpkin Brain. It’s that versatility that gives the fight figure an advantage in the vinyl toy world. Some people say you have to fight to live, I say I live for fight figures.

Until next time, live that 24/7 Toy Life!

Stinky Ginger: An Anatomy

Chris Ryniak’s Stinky Ginger sofubi made a heck of an entrance at this year’s DesignerCon as a low-run, unpainted edition dubbed “Raw”. Retailing for 65 bucks per and run of just 65 pieces, most of the little Stinkers flew off the table before noon (did you see the photos?!), along with Kathie’s Calliope Jackalope and Brandt’s Toxic Marshmallow Stingy Jack.

Stinky is the third release from the Tomenosuke + Circus Posterus line of sofubi. If the name and header card weren’t any indication, she reeks something fierce with an equally-snarky attitude to match.

Chris’s original model stands on the left, accompanied by Yohei Kaneko’s modified version on the right. The figure was resized in scale with Stingy Jack and Calliope and slight adjustments were made to her features.

Recap: Circus Posterus @ DesignerCon 2012!

The Circus Posterus caravan is back from DesignerCon and this year was easily the most insane yet! With the launch of the Tomenosuke + CP line of sofubi, new editions, a ton of customs and signing sessions with each of the artists, the booth was nothing short of a hoedown the entire day. Thanks to everyone who braved the crowds and stopped by the booth to say hello; we’ll see you all next year!

Chris Ryniak is Bringin’ the Stink to this Year’s DesignerCon!

At long last we have our first look at Chris Ryniak’s Stingy Ginger in sofubi form and she (yes, she!) is making her big debut at DesignerCon in Pasadena this Saturday! Dubbed “Raw Stinky”, this uber-limited unpainted edition is a run of just 65 pieces and stands 6 inches. A handful will be available at the Circus Posterus booth (#500) for $65 and the remainder of the edition will sell through Tomenosuke-syoten and Stranger Factory later on. Between Ms. Stinky and her pals Calliope and Stingy, the CP booth will be a busy one, so be ready when the doors open at 9am. Come bearing sweets and you’ll win them over for sure — critters and artists alike!

DesignerCon opens Nov. 3rd for one day only at the Pasadena Convention Centre in Pasadena, CA. Event is on from 9am to 6pm. See ya there!

Kathie Olivas’s Calliope Jackalope Sofubi is Coming to DesignerCon!

In and among the myriad of exciting new Tomenosuke + CP sofubi releases emerging at this year’s DesignerCon is Kathie Olivas’s long-awaited Calliope Jackalope #1. First seen as a prototype at Monsters & Misfits II last April, this beautiful little lady will debut in a robin’s egg blue colorway and is limited to just 120 pieces at $95ish a pop. Similar to Brandt’s Toxic Marshmallow Stingy Jack, which is also releasing at the Con, roughly half of the edition will be available and the remainder will then be divvied up between Tomenosuke-syoten and Stranger Factory for online sales later on. CP forum members, watch the boards for a lottery announcement!

Circus Posterus will have an entire booth dedicated to the Tomenosuke+CP line of sofubi at this year’s DesignerCon (#500), so be sure to stop by and check out the goods for yourself if you’ve yet to get your paws on some vinyl goodness. We have more exciting announcements in the pipeline, so don’t wander too far!

Mike Egan’s Brown and Cream Bones

  • by

I think after the Halloween holiday is over, I will still say stuff is perfect for Halloween all year around.

Mike Egan has a new colorway (brown and cream) of his Bones vinyl. I was able to obtain the first two colorways at this past year’s sdcc, and this piece is really pops. Bones stands at approximately 8 inches tall and made of Japanese cream colored soft vinyl (sofubi) with an aged brown rub. This is manufactured by the great Luke Rook/Grody Shogun. These are limited to only 40 and $45, and only available here.

Stingy Jack Sofubi Colorway #2 to Debut @ DCon 2012!

Following the insane success of Brandt Peters’s first sofubi Stingy Jack in August, the pumpkin-headed trickster is back for another spin with the Circus. Hot out of the molds from Obitsu, the second colorway just wrapped up and is slated to debut at DesignerCon 2012!

Inspired by Brandt’s “Toxic Marshmallow” resin custom from Monsters & Misfits II, this next colorway from Tomenosuke + Circus Posterus packs a heck of palette that’s guaranteed to stand-out from the rest of the collection. Just check out the fade on his noggin!

The Toxic Marshmallow colorway is an edition of 120 pieces. Roughly half of the run will be available at the CP booths (#500) during DCon and the rest will then be split between Tomenosuke -syoten and Stranger Factory. These will be sold shortly after the Con (date TBA). Price is $95 per figure. CP board members, stay tuned for a lottery announcement on the forums.

Hang on to your hats, my friends — things are about to get crazy!

Mikee’s Mail Day: MVH’s Unpainted DX Sludge Demon!

So yes, I admittedly took a week off from mail, but that’s ’cause I was going toy wild at this year’s NYCC!! I will be posting a full Mikee’s Mail Day: NYCC Edition soon, but first I wanted to showcase one toy in particular:

To be completely honest, I love Mutant Vinyl Hardcore’s DX Sludge Demon. I think it’s my favorite sculpt this year; it has this fun/creepy look that reminds me of the movie Ghoulies. Add the fact that I, too, am a very sick and twisted individual who was raised on horror movies and Misfits records, and you can see why this toy may be my soul mate. Rich Montanari Jr., the evil mastermind behind MVH, is a long lost brother from another mother!! Out of the four Sludge DX releases at NYCC (YES! Four! I bought five!), two were themed on horror movies. Did you read what I just wrote? Two were themed on horror movies!!! The header card art for the above “Chest Burster” is riddled with Alien references! I almost cried.

(I instead went back to the place I was crashing at and watched Prometheus, but I wanted to cry.)

It’s also worth noting that this release was coupled with a print by Scarecrowoven. The print is layered and gorgeous and terrifying.

With MVH ready to release a painted version of the DX Sludge Demon in the next month or so, I can’t wait to add to the MVH collection. It’s October, guys: embrace your inner Mikee and be creepy! Don’t sleep on something this awesome!

Until next time, live that 24/7 Toy Life!

Ian the Sewer Creep by our own Mikee Riggs Skates into NYCC

  • by

Big CONGRATS to our own Mikee Riggs because he is about to unleash his baby known as Ian the Sewer Creep!

NYCC-goers, consider this your first and only warning to GTFO because NYC is about to get a whole lot scummier. Originally a gang of ragtag punks and skaters who hung around the waste tunnels of Pelican City, a toxic spill turned the defiled Sewer Creeps from no-good hoodlums into no-good mutants! And now, after months of living in dumpsters, skulking the sewers and doing whatever is necessary to survive, Sewer Creep gang leader Ian is taking a step into daylight for the first time ever this weekend as a part of New York Comic Con.

The brain child of rabid Kaiju collector and Stranger Factory’s own Mikee Riggs of Toys Are Sanity, Ian The Sewer Creep is 7in. of sofubi scum! Designed by Riggs and sculpted by Papagrim Toys, Ian will debut in black factory paint and handpaint versions this weekend via the Monster Island Table (#3317). Factory paints are $60, customs TBA.

Good for Mikee! Now everyone go get one or suffer my look of haughty derision.

NYCC takes place Oct. 11-14 at Javits Center in New York City!
