Ragnar for Monsters & Misfits III

  • by

Ragnar1Another strong addition to this year’s Monsters & Misfits show in Takayama, Japan is the almighty Ragnar! Like all the others, Ragnar is hard at work and burning the midnight oil to make this museum show as epic as the two predecessors. With the opening less than six weeks away, we thought it was time to show you some of what Ragnar has in the works from sketch to early sculpts.
remember these are works in progress

Available in the Circus Posterus Store

  • by

In case you haven’t checked out the Circus Posterus Web Store recently, we are bringing you some gems that are a must for all Circus Collectors.

purpleset_olivermortimer_artoyz[1]Oliver and Mortimer by Brandt Peters and Kathie Olivas come from two different sides of the tracks but are both amazing inhabitants of the CP family.
You can get them as a set (like the purple set above) or individualy here.

4legged_starrymidnight_masaoSkelves don’t last long when they are up for sale, but we have found a few remaining 4-legged Starry Midnight Masao skelves to purr you into a sweet slumber at night. Created by Brandt Peters and Kathie Olivas, this skelve is what dreams are made of. You can find this skull masked feline here.  sorry for the bad puns but they were too easy
bp_stingyjack2
From the Tomenosuke x CP sofubi line we have the Toxic Marshmallow Stingy Jack. Stingy has been a fan favorite for quite a while now, and we have just a small handful of these guys left. Adorned in October styled colors, this Stingy Jack screams for any Halloween display (or cosplay if you ask us). Toxic Marshmallow Stingy Jack is available right here.

Shing Yin Khor sets sail for “A Nervous Harbour”

  • by

shingprogress4One of Circus Posterus’ newest artists Shing Yin Khor, aka Sawdust Bear is hard at work for her solo show “A Nervous Harbour” at Stranger Factory.

shingprogress3

Shing isn’t holding back at all with her show in the gallery’s Project Room because she is putting more dead things in more boxes than we have ever seen before. Of course, we all know these are not real dead things but they are real boxes she made herself. Her workbench is overflowing with pieces and parts all around, amazingly sculpted otherworld specimens waiting for their displays, driftwood longing for Albuquerque sun, and even a drill for headaches after long hours. Hurry up Shing, and quit slacking.

“A Nervous Harbour” runs September 6th – 29th, with an opening reception on Friday, September 6th from 6 – 9 PM.

Amanda Louise Spayd’s Resin Dust Bunnies

  • by

1cfbb038fa4311e29ad222000a1f97a2_7By the looks of Amanda Louise Spayd’s Instagram feed, it looks like she is creating a low budget horror movie or making some of the finest chocolate confections this side of Switzerland. In fact, these drippy, wide-eye, chocolate looking creations are the first ever resin Dust Bunnies slated for release at Monsters & Misfits III

Amanda is still working on finalizing a name for them, but we know she will think up something clever. The two toothed bunnies stand 8 inches tall and are solid resin. Amanda is hard at work casting and painting them all by hand. Most for MMIII will be festooned with hats, ruffles, etc. that we all have come to love with Amanda’s creations. Did we mention that all the ones she is doing right now have glass eyes too?

So far, Amanda has no plans for a massive run of these since they are exhausting to create all by herself – as you can tell, she’s even using her fridge to cool down her sculpting clay! The goal is for 4-8 to be done for MMIII in Japan with a few saved up for later. Honestly, we can’t wait to see what the finished painted product looks like because the development pics are already outstanding (and look like glazed doughnuts and chocolate bunnies).

A peek into Turf One’s studio

  • by

I always enjoy getting to peek into an artist’s studio, so I was ecstatic when Jean Labourdette (Turf One) sent in some shots of his! And then I was promptly amazed at how anyone manages to work in that enthusiastically messy space, but I digress…:)

Jean definitely looks like he’s in work-mode for his upcoming show at Stranger Factory, and the variety of amazing little things on his wall gloriously reflect his surreal, delightfully disconcerting, antiqued style. I can’t wait to see what he’s cooking up for September!

Travis Louie and Turf One‘s “Tiny Theater of the Absurd” runs September 6th – 29th, with an opening reception on Friday, September 6th from 6 – 9 PM.

Monsters & Misfits Mondays: Nocturna Skelve

  • by

midiTo help with the Monday blues, we are starting Monsters & Misfits Mondays (we will actually be talking about the show most days but it sounds good)!

This week, we bring you very exciting news because Monsters & Misfits III will bring the first edition Midi Skelve, called Nocturna! We haven’t seen too many Midi Skelves out and about yet, but for those that do not recall, these stand a good 14 inches tall. As seen above, the finishing touches are going on the Nocturna Skelve, and the blue shades are stellar along with the awesome buttflap.

Nocturna will be a low edition of only 12 at $450 each with half debuting at Monsters & Misfits III.

Travis Louie / Turf One / Shing Yin Khor – September at Stranger Factory

  • by

September 2013 brings two new exhibits to Stranger Factory; a dual exhibit by world renowned artists Travis Louie and Jean Labourdette a.k.a. Turf One, as well as a solo exhibit in the Project Room by Shing Yin Khor, a.k.a. Sawdust Bear.

Both exhibits run September 6th – 29th, with an opening reception on Friday, September 6th from 6 – 9 PM.

In the Main Gallery, we feature Travis Louie and Turf One‘s “Tiny Theater of the Absurd”, an exhibit of new work from these two artists showcasing their marvelous oddities; people and creatures that live in the grey area between dream and waking.

Turf One’s paintings are truly modern surrealism, and at times seem to be the fuzzy, morning-after recollections of fever dreams with their strange symbolism. Travis Louie’s remarkable “parlour portraits” of fantastic beasts and human oddities bring humor and humanity to the monsters that live on the fringes of our imagination. Together, these remarkable artists breathe new life into modern art with style and wit.

In the Project Room will be “A Nervous Harbour,” a new solo exhibit by Sawdust Bear.

This exhibit is a collection of handmade, barnacle-encrusted beasties seeking sanctuary from rough seas and aquatic predators. Each sculpture and painting brings to life another black-eyed and bewildered little nugget of improbable evolution, washed up on beaches and harbours, then stuffed, mounted and classified for your collecting pleasure. If cryptozoology had a marine biology exhibit, this would be it!

For those of you keeping track, we have been slowly pulling back the curtain on what you can anticipate for Monsters & Misfits III coming up this September. Two more from James Groman

We are only a few hours away from seeing all the monster goodness in the “Lost Worlds” preview, and just over 24 hours way from the stellar opening at Stranger Factory! Time to keep up the amazing line of teasers with two more paintings from the remarkable James Groman.

One painting is a Madball styled interplanetary being, while the other is a father and son monster moment ala Godzilla and Godzilla Jr. Speaking of Godzilla, what is lurking between the two canvases? Besides the monsters coming alive from the canvas, the paint is brilliant and really pops.

You can see these pieces in person at “Lost Worlds” opening August 2nd at Stranger Factory featuring the incredible monsters of Paul Kaiju, James Groman, Josh Herbolsheimer, Stan Manoukian, Joe Merril, Goccodo, and Mutant Vinyl Hardcore.
