The Banshee is said to be a type of faery or spirit who warns of an imminent death by wailing, shrieking or keening. It is an awful, heart wrenching sound and it’s purpose is to simply warn the family so they can prepare themselves the loss. Other ways she might warn include appearing as an apparition, singing, tapping at the window in the form of a crow, knocking at the door or whispering a name or by speaking through a medium. In Irish lore, the Banshee was a beautiful woman whereas in Scotland she is more of an old crone. Some tales state that certain noble Irish families had Banshee attendants and it was a great honor. In any case, she was never seen as evil or disrespected.
