Stingy Jack: An Anatomy, Pt. 5

 Previously on Stingy Jack, An Anatomy 4: We get our first look at Stingy in coloured vinyl and apply new paint mods to help show off his assets. And then, the unthinkable: the unforgiving heat of New Mexico warps Stingy’s feet, causing him to shelf dive. So, we rebuild: his feet are remodeled and repositioned for better stability. He’s tested and stands. And now: the exciting conclusion!

After a year of planning and production, 120 Stingy Jacks arrive on Tomenosuke’s doorstep from Obitsu. Half will head to New Mexico for the North American release, while the remainder will stay back for international collectors. An overwhelming feeling of relief and pride spills over Tomenosuke store owner and T+CP partner, Shinji Nakako.

“Since it took a full year to complete, I think that’s all the more strong feelings towards this piece,” Shinji reflects on the experience.

“I assumed that I had acquired plenty of experience in toy making from the resin figure Lady Butterfly and the high-end prop replica Tomenosuke Blaster, but what awaited me were the challenges and excitements unique to vinyl.

“The task at hand was to create a model for mass production without sacrificing the nuance of the original sculpture, while clearing certain limitations involved with forming from metal mold,” Shinji continues. “I thought that I knew fully well of the material’s characteristic of being sensitive to heat, but due to the high temperatures in the summer, the base of the figure’s feet had deformed and could not support itself. As a result, We had to make the feet from scratch.

It’s only sofubi, but it’s still sofubi… not something that could be done in a brief period of time.”

Teodoru Badiu’s Custom Wippos for Le Carnaval des Spectres, 9.13

As part of an impressive display of new 2D works for Le Carnaval des Spectres, Vienna-based CP artist Teodoru Badiu will also debut his long-awaited Wippo figure at the exhibition, opening next month at Artoyz Paris. Five custom Wippos will make an appearance at the gallery, each hand-painted with love and affection by the artist. Looking great, so far!

Le Carnaval des Spectres opens Sept. 13 through Oct. 20th at Artoyz Shop + Galerie in Paris, France. The exhibition marks CP’s first group exhibition on European soil and features a collection of new two- and three-dimensional works from Kathie Olivas, Brandt Peters, Travis Louie, Chris Ryniak, Amanda Louise Spayd and Teodoru Badiu.

Doktor A’s 8″ Ironclad Decimator Dunny from Kidrobot, 9.6

Professor Teslastein jaggedly cuts, bending back the metal flesh.  Feverishly he works to create new vehicles of destruction for his nefarious exploits. Two models take shape from the scraps: in one he plants a vine to give it strength and in the other he gives a piece of himself. The Frankendunnys come alive. He leaves his laboratory, happy with his success, not noticing a third figure has risen from the decay. Concealed in the shadows, its eyes are glowing, gears are turning, and electric current is pulsing with life.

Doktor A fans, prepare to render your F5 key inoperable on September 6th. Rising from the steel slab of Professor Teslastein’s lab is the Ironclad Decimator Dunny, a riveted Rupture robot hardwired for destruction.

The 8-inch dunny is available in two editions: Regular and Mecha Rupture, as well as a chase that has yet to be revealed. The Regular, fashioned in a metallic silver and gold with a electric blue lightening bolt, will be available exclusively through Kidrobot stores and Kidrobot.com. His counterpart, Mecha Rupture, is a retailer release (store list here). He sports a matte pink with high-gloss black and white palette and black translucent lightening bolt. Both editions are a limited run of 600 pieces and the chase is 200 pieces (1:6 ratio). They retail for $75 per. Buckle up; things are gonna get nutty.

New In-Progress Magic from Amanda Spayd for ‘Origins of the Forest’, 9.7

With Origins of the Forest just two weeks away, Amanda Louise Spayd’s studio is in full-swing production mode with little resin faces and plush bodies blanketing every conceivable surface. It also means a steady stream of WIP shots hitting Instagram, which always makes us tingle with antici … pation.

I’ll let the critters speak for themselves; Mandi’s WIP shots are nothing short of magical and for a show that seemingly crept up on all of us, it appears we are in for something very special.

Origins of the Forest opens Sept. 7th at myplasticheart with a reception with the artist from 6pm to 9pm. The exhibition is on view through Oct. 7th.

Brandt Peters’ Sofubi Stingy Jack Dropping This Weekend!

The wait is finally over! Tomenosuke-syoten and Circus Posterus are excited to announce that production on Brandt Peters’ sofubi Stingy Jack is complete and will be releasing this weekend!

A run of 120 pieces, the edition will be halved between Circus Posterus and Tomenosuke-syoten (so 60 per store). They retail for $95 each (7,600 yen) and stand around 6 inches. Each comes poly-bagged with a header card signed by Mr. Brandt Peters himself.

CP will handle North American collectors only (MUST be shipped to a North American destination). The figures will be available through Stranger Factory on Sunday, Aug. 26th at 1pm PST. The release will be treated just like a gallery request, so email strangerfactorysales@gmail.com at exactly 1pm on Aug. 26th for your chance to purchase.

Tomenosuke-syoten will handle all other international collectors (North American orders will be denied). The figures will drop at midnight Japan time on Aug. 25th (early Sunday morning) via the Tomenosuke + CP sales page.

Stingy Jack: An Anatomy, Part 4

 Previously on Stingy Jack, An Anatomy III: The flashing is cut, the tests are assembled and the Pantones are picked. Now: troubleshooting, colour-castin’ and package graphics!

After the test-pulls were sent to New Mexico and green-lit by Brandt, Stingy Jack took another spin through Obitsu, this time for colour-casting. What you see above is not paint application — but actual coloured vinyl which is then painted. Scroll a bit and you’ll see what I mean:

This is one of the first paint tests. Two paint masks were developed for the eyes and collar, along with applications to Stingy’s hat and hands. After this first pass it was determined that another mask would be added to Stingy’s right hand as the cigar looks like a finger. The pom-poms on his belly would also be painted for added emphasis.

Amanda Louise Spayd’s ‘Origins of the Forest’ @ myplasticheart 9.7

Wow, this snuck up real fast. Opening next month at myplasticheart is Amanda Louise Spayd’s second solo show of 2012, Origins of the Forest. Channeling the magic of last year’s blow out exhibition, Late Season, Origins is rooted in the rustic, woodland themes we’ve come to love and expect from Mandi. And just in time for the Fall!

“I feel most at home when I am in the woods,” Amanda writes from her studio in rural Ohio. “This show is sort of my homage to the forest – the textures, colors, legends, and animals that live there or are the representation of that place. Expect to see more furry creatures than I usually do, as well as a selection of sort of Bavarian folk art-inspired colors and designs. Summer is beginning to wind down, but the forests are still very vibrant and alive.”

New Teasers from Kathie Olivas for ‘Haunted’ @ AFA NYC 10.20

The eye candy continues to trickle out from CP HQ, where Kathie is busy juggling preps for Paris this September with what’s shaping up to be a cracking solo exhibition the following month at AFA NYC. This round of ladies is for the latter: a striking (albeit slightly unsettling) original sculpt of Siamese twins, followed by a gorgeous Lizzie custom (these always kill me) and seriously freakish lady off to the left (watch your back). The bronze 4-legged is for Paris.

Haunted opens Oct. 20th at AFA NYC. Opening reception with KO from 7pm to 9pm; come say hi!

Doktor A’s ‘Ophelia Grimm’ for A Postcard from New Yorkshire, 10.12

Doktor A has just put the finishing touches on all of the dimensional pieces for his upcoming solo show at myplasticheart this October, A Postcard from New Yorkshire. First to be revealed is this stunning original, Ophelia Grimm:

Chronic nyctophobe, Ophelia is terrified of the dark. Sadly, her grand house was inherited from an eccentric uncle who built it without windows, so she was forced to squander her fortunes on candles…

Miss Ophelia stands 9.5″ tall, or 11.5″ with the vintage brass dome. She and the (seriously impressive) candles are crafted from vinyl, ABS, rubber, lead, glass, styrene, polymer clay, vintage draughtsman’s tools & clock key, and other repurposed treasures.

A Postcard from New Yorkshire opens at MPH during NYCC weekend, Oct. 12, and is on view until Nov. 11th.
