Monsters & Misfits Mondays: Dok A brings out the Skeletons

  • by

NecromancerSo Doktor A looks to have brought the skeletons out of the closet for Monsters & Misfits III.  Keeping with the night parade feel of the show, it looks as if Bruce (Dok A) has one of his robots engineering a parade float in the form of a skeleton known as Necromancer.! This looks like a hard task for the little fella, but Dok’s robots will trudge on with their steam and cogs! We won’t know the full details for a couple of weeks, but we wanted to show you what we could.

Monsters & Misfits III is going to be epic!

Andrew Bell

About the Artists:

Brandt Peters is an internationally recognized artist, illustrator, character and toy designer. His work hearkens back to the earliest days of comics and animation, with a seeming simplicity that hides layers of intricate backstory. His unerring sense of composition, combined with a strong narrative thread that has consistently woven through all his work for the past decade, has made him a favorite of art and toy collectors the world over.

Kathie Olivas is an internationally exhibited multi-media artist from New Mexico. Through her current body of work she explores society’s insatiable desire to assign ‘cuteness’ and our discomfort with the unknown. A dark blend of early American portraiture set in post apocalyptic times, Kathie’s paintings and custom toys are a satirical look at how fear affects our sense of reality.

Amanda Louise Spayd is a maker of the highest order. An accomplished artist, sculptor, musician, soap maker, and student of perfumery, Amanda spends a lot of time in the woods, watching birds, collecting feathers, dead insects, bones, and other artifacts. She can often be found poking through antique stores looking for beat-up treasures for inspiration, which she finds in historical fashion and textiles, the excess and ridiculousness of high-societies past, natural materials and their inevitable decay, the raw and instinctual behaviors of animals, and in artists such as Jan Svankmajer, Odd Nerdrum, Joseph Cornell, and Hieronymous Bosch, among others.

Chris Ryniak

Doktor A is one the most well-known steampunk character artists in the world, and his work has set the industry standard for mechanical gentleman. His characters have been produced by multiple companies including Arts Unknown, DYZ Plastic, and Kidrobot.Chris Ryniak was born as a baby in 1976 in the suburbs of Detroit. He spent his childhood basking in the warm glow of Saturday morning cartoons and flipping over rocks in search of insects, reptiles and ghosts. A graduate and former instructor of the Ringling School of Art and Design, he is now a painter and sculptor of all manner of critters. Chris’ work has been exhibited in galleries throughout the United States, Europe, and Southeast Asia. His paintings have also been published in numerous books and periodicals in multiple countries. Chris resides in Ohio with his two children, and a collection of skulls that rivals many museums.

Andrew Bell’s work spans a wide spectrum of mediums from illustrations and paintings to toys and sculptures. Much of his work is brought together by a sense of humor that often belies a more serious and sombre message.   His work has been featured in solo and group gallery shows from LA to Paris and has been covered by publications such as The New York Times and Wired.

Doktor A

Carisa Swenson’s passion for creating curious creatures springs from many sources—a love of mythological tales and Ray Harryhausen’s creations when she was a child, an appreciative eye for Henson Workshop in her teens, to the weird and wonderful films of Jan Svankmajer and The Brothers Quay in her twenties. When Carisa studied with world-renowned doll artist Wendy Froud, the final die was cast: posable dolls would forever own her soul and trouble her nights, stirring her with a fervor that could only be quelled by stitching and sculpting her dreams into reality. Since 2006, Carisa’s work has been featured in several publications, including Spectrum 17 and 19, and exhibits her dolls throughout the United States as well as internationally.

Ragnar is an acclaimed artist and designer, inspired by all the things he loves; film noir, classic cartoons, mid century design and punk rock. After extended stays in Japan, Mexico, Taiwan and San Francisco he landed in Los Angeles to attend Art Center College Of Design. For the better part of a decade, creative projects have included working as character designer and art director for virtually every studio in town including- Disney, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Sony, MTV and Warner Bros.

His punk rock ethos would eventually drive him back to the do-it-yourself world where he’s quickly garnered a large and growing following of fervent fans and collectors.

Stan Manoukian is an internationally recognized artist/illustrator, toy designer, seasoned comic book artist, development and story designer for film and commercials, who has been creating monsters and building fans for years in both Europe and the US. Impassioned by old books, dictionaries, old engraved plates and paintings, Manoukian is inspired to present his creatures within the manners and styling of old encyclopedias – indexing, classifying and properly documenting them for future generations.

Amanda Louise Spayd’s Resin Dust Bunnies

  • by

1cfbb038fa4311e29ad222000a1f97a2_7By the looks of Amanda Louise Spayd’s Instagram feed, it looks like she is creating a low budget horror movie or making some of the finest chocolate confections this side of Switzerland. In fact, these drippy, wide-eye, chocolate looking creations are the first ever resin Dust Bunnies slated for release at Monsters & Misfits III

Amanda is still working on finalizing a name for them, but we know she will think up something clever. The two toothed bunnies stand 8 inches tall and are solid resin. Amanda is hard at work casting and painting them all by hand. Most for MMIII will be festooned with hats, ruffles, etc. that we all have come to love with Amanda’s creations. Did we mention that all the ones she is doing right now have glass eyes too?

So far, Amanda has no plans for a massive run of these since they are exhausting to create all by herself – as you can tell, she’s even using her fridge to cool down her sculpting clay! The goal is for 4-8 to be done for MMIII in Japan with a few saved up for later. Honestly, we can’t wait to see what the finished painted product looks like because the development pics are already outstanding (and look like glazed doughnuts and chocolate bunnies).

WIP by Andrew Bell for Monsters & Misfits III

Bell MMIIIAndrew Bell is going to Japan for Monsters & Misfits III with the Circus Posterus hooligans, and we have some developing work by his awesome self. This toothy looking glob is well on its way to being a creature straight from Andrew’s head! Still in its very early stages, it seems like a bellybutton is even going to make an appearance (an inny too) with an ice cream coned swirled noggin. We will keep everyone updated on more work when we get tidbits here and there, but we can already tell you that this show will blow you out of the water like Godzilla doing a belly flop!!!

Grab a ride with Dok A for Monsters & Misfits III

Tric2

What? Is Dok A trying to torture us with this image for Monsters & Misfits IIINow, we can surmise that this has to be a robot of sorts driving a tricycle, but just how big is this dude? Will there be a passenger in the back? Hold up – it looks like the legs move with the pedals too!!! Since this is still a major work in progress before it heads off to Japan in September, we may not know for a bit, but  this looks like an epic undertaking!

Countdown to the Carnival: Brandt’s Fantôme Zombambies

  • by

Step right up! Step right up, now! With the opening of Le Carnaval des Spectres mere days away, we’re offering folks a sneak peek at the fresh-from-the-grave, newly-reanimated and flat-out spooky editions that will emerge from the Circus caravan next week at Artoyz Paris.

First out of the gate is guts and gore galore from Brandt Peters, as he debuts his highly-anticipated Fantôme Zombambies. Initially released as a handful of candy-themed customs for Monsters & Misfits II, the herd returns as a slightly stinkier, unappetizing, but equally badass spectre edition. Entirely handpainted by Brandt with acrylics, these resin beasties have GID eyes that bring chills when beneath a blacklight. The Zombambies are super limited edition of 20, with five heading to Paris and the rest will be divvied up between CP forum members and a lottery (if applicable). They retail for $300 a head (intestine, spinal column, etc…).

Tomorrow the ghastliness continues with the long-awaited return of a fan favorite. So stick around — we’re just warming up!

Le Carnaval des Spectres opens Sept. 13th through Oct. 20th at Artoyz Shop + Galerie in Paris, France. The exhibition includes new works from Kathie OlivasBrandt Peters, Travis LouieChris RyniakAmanda Louise Spayd, and Teodoru Badiu.

CP Sofubi: Stingy Jack Goes Into Production!

  • by

*Sniff* *sniff* … ahhh … you smell that? That, my friends, is the scent of sweet, sweet sofubi vinyl going into production. Following his big first reveal during the Monsters & Misfits Japan tour last month, Brandt Peters’ devilish Stingy Jack (in collaboration with Tomenosuke-syoten) has since been improved in a couple of areas, making the toy thicker and better supported. Level up, baby … this little mischief maker is hitting the conveyer catwalk looking better than ever.

The first colorway is anticipated to drop at the end of June (fingers crossed). We’ll drop a sneak or two closer to the date.

In other news: Kathie Olivas’ Callipe Jackalope is just about finished in wax and is on its way to molds. We’ll keep y’all in the loop on that project as it develops as well. So much goodness in the works right now! *Asplodes*

For those new to all this awesome, Circus Posterus’ sofubi vinyl is a brand-spankin’-new collaborative project in conjunction with Japan’s Tomenosuke-syoten. Three figures in this series have been revealed thus far: Brandt’s Stingy Jack, Kathie’s Calliope Jackalope and Chris Ryniak’s Stinky Ginger. The figures are slated for release throughout 2012, with Stingy Jack making the first exit around end-June(ish). Since it’s a collab project, the editions will be shared between CP and Tomenosuke, with each party receiving half. In other words, these will be limited, there will be chaos and you’ll feel freaking INVINCIBLE when you score one after stumbling with anxious fingers and a pounding heart. Welcome to the league of F5.

Stick around, folks — things are just starting to heat up!!

What Happens When You Steal a Bubblegut’s Ice Cream

You have to hand it to Chris Ryniak for his mastery of the tragicomical. I mean, this is ridiculous: this guy’s pout is so deep that his chin and forehead probably hurt, while for us it’s our guts from laughing. This is the freestanding Bubblegut we first glimpsed a few weeks back, and what’s funny is that his gut was so big that Chris had to shave some of it off. Poor little beast … I wonder when he last saw his toes. Anyway, we’ll see this fella with all of his friends at Monsters & Misfits II in Japan. Exhibition kicks off April 13th!
