Dark Playgrounds by Johnpaul Gutierrez

Gutierrez developed the theme of Dark Playgrounds in response to the
growing uncertainty of our children’s future. Having two young
children himself has caused him to reflect on the upcoming
difficulties of navigating the rapidly, changing world. Witnessing the
constant chaos and unrest in the news as well as social media, has
created a nervous agitation about humanity’s immediate future and more
so for our littlest and most vulnerable humans. The need to express
this concern became prominent as playgrounds and schools were shut
down due to the pandemic.

Gutierrez creates a swirling mashup of slides, skulls, and symbolic
creatures emerging from the eyes and mouths of colorful faces. The
characters are the hidden voices that are constantly trying to dictate
a response; these monsters emerge yelling and suspicious while
inhabiting this dark playground.

Dark Playgrounds was created using acrylic paint, watercolor, and the
artist’s favorite medium, pen and pencil.

Bystander in My Tale of Luck by Defective Pudding

Self-taught illustrator and visual artist, Christa Dippel, works under
the artist name Defective Pudding. Her works are primarily created in
color pencil and graphite. Her pieces take on a nostalgic, sweet
appearance while also exploring melancholy subjects. She draws most of
her inspiration from vintage media, toys, and clothes, as well as
wildlife and nature.

Bystander in My Tale of Luck explores the daily experience of anxiety,
mental exhaustion, and a wide range of emotions that mute any attempt
at productivity. Defective Pudding puts emphasis on the emotions in
her creations by utilizing the artist’s feelings towards one’s daily
life. The feeling of an inexperienced gambler each morning, waking up
with no clue what to expect, and the feeling of losing more often than
not. Hope you enjoy this tale of luck.

Portland based artist, Lana Crooks will be having an ongoing solo
exhibition, Found Lost. Unlike other shows, this one is released as
small collections throughout the rest of the year. The next phase of
this series is coming soon.

We will be rescheduling our upcoming exhibitions; check our website for updates!

Brandt Peters & Phil Noto coming this November! This will be a preview
show for a larger upcoming exhibit in February!

April at Stranger Factory: ALL OF EVERYTHING ERASED / Joe Scarano and THE HOUSE AND THE DEVIL / JohnPaul Gutierrez

This APRIL at STRANGER FACTORY
ALL OF EVERYTHING ERASED / Joe Scarano and THE HOUSE AND THE DEVIL / JohnPaul Gutierrez
April 5th – April 28th, 2019
Opening Reception: Friday, April 5th from 6-8 PM

Take a break at Stranger Factory and explore All of Everything Erased, a show inspirited through the idea of pausing. Pausing long enough for the grass and the weeds to swallow you up for a while.

Fascinated by the idea of abandoned buildings giving in to nature, Joe Scarano’s characters are brought to life as they fall into varying states of disrepair. As they let the grass grow over them and get swallowed back up by the landscape, the viewer has the pleasure of witnessing and imagining that the will eventually wake up again after the earth has grown around and start over.

Scarano was guided to create this show after recalling memories in an old neighborhood in which his children would seek to explore an abandoned house with him. The title of the show, All of Everything Erased comes from a Kevin Devine song of the same name. Influenced by the paintings, Scarano could not get the song out of his mind and Kevin was kind enough to let him borrow the song title for the show.

Stranger Factory is happy to present JohnPaul Gutierrez in his show, The House and The Devil.

The House and the Devil portrays the many negative voices that we create within ourselves. The Devil is represented not in a religious or spiritual context but simply as the adversary telling lies and creating fear. These voices that we house inside, waking us up in the middle of the night or creating a paralyzing fear, prevent us from achieving our truest self. The House, being a little worn down and weathered seeks to maintain the onslaught, and pushes on in hopes of achieving their dreams.

Gutierrez is an Albuquerque local and returning artist to Stranger Factory.

The Succulent Gardener
Solo exhibition of new work by Johnpaul Gutierrez
August 4 – 27, 2017
Opening reception, August 4, 6-9 pm
John Paul Guiterrez’s new solo exhibition, “The Succulent Gardener”, brings this local Albuquerque talent to Stranger Factory for second solo exhibition of new drawings and paintings. His work focuses on surreal worlds where flora and fauna are sometimes indistinguishable from one another; sometimes as one, co-existing as distortions in a phantom reality. Guiterrez transports you into his dream-like landscape that is familiar enough to draw you in but strange enough that you cannot look away until you’ve decoded every dense layer of symbolism and iconography. Best described as “naturalist meets surrealist”, Stranger Factory is excited to bring you new works from this incredible talent.
