AFA Hosts Annual Collector’s Event, 12.1

On Dec. 1, NYC’s AFA Gallery is hosting its annual Collector’s Event, a one-evening affair where art lovers come together, share a cocktail and admire the gallery’s breathtaking collection of fine art and illustration. Rare PEANUTS comics strips and illustrations are pulled from the vault for the event, along with original Beatles Yellow Submarine animation cels and illustrations from Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein, and Bill Watterson.

Also joining these art greats on the walls are some of today’s leading contemporary artists, including Kathie Olivas, Nicoletta Ceccoli, Kinuko Craft, Lin Esser, Tom Everhart, Brian Froud, Travis Louie, Kristen Margiotta and Abby Modell, some of whom will be in attendance. For those who missed the opening of Kathie’s Haunted exhibition, this is a wonderful opportunity to stop in. And be in the company of some of the industry’s greatest creatives, to boot!

Recap: Kathie Olivas “Haunted” Solo Exhibition @ AFA NYC, 10.20

Kathie Olivas’s newest solo exhibition, Haunted, opened to a packed house at AFA gallery in lower Manhattan’s beautiful and bustling Soho neighborhood last Saturday. With 20 new paintings and eight custom sculpts, Haunted is Kathie’s largest and most ambitious collection of work to date and it did not disappoint. The evening kicked off with an artist walkthrough with the AFA staff and a brief Q&A period for the first hour.  Shortly after, the doors were unlocked and the wine uncorked. signalling the start of the celebration! Some Final Teasers from KO for ‘Haunted’ @ AFANYC, 10.20

A Rare Look into Kathie Olivas’s Studio as She Prepares for ‘Haunted’ @ AFA

While vacationing in Albuquerque a couple of months ago, Kathie offered me the absolute pleasure of shooting some in-progress paintings for Haunted, her solo opening later this month at AFA NYC. It had been a little over a year since I had visited her studio, and the thought of documenting the work to later share with the fans was obviously a thrill. It’s why bloggers do what they do, after all, and it isn’t often that we get an intimate look behind the scenes at CP HQ.

Kathie’s studio is detached from the rest of their house in the mountains. Slipping out the sliding door of the sculpture studio and through a gate leading to the side yard, you then climb up the rocky facade of a small-but-steep incline that actually turns into cliff if you go the wrong way. Hanging a left, you soon see it: a large, glassed-in gazebo with wraparound deck. Ask Kathie about it and she’ll educate (and enterain) you on the perils of building into solid rock.

Despite its imposing size, the interior space of the gazebo is rather tight, with nearly every square inch occupied by easels, canvases, shelving and supplies. Shooting the art became a nerve-racking game of hopscotch as I tried to get the right angle without turning the canvases into dominoes.

The art shown here is only a sampling of what will be on exhibit at AFA. There are also the three-dimensional works, which were lurking in another studio in the house. Kathie’s workspace aside, there are also the toy and print studios, which I’ll document next visit. There’s also their rec room, where paintings and sculpts often spill onto tables, counter tops and any other conceivable surface. Pop into a washroom and you may see 30 some odd Stingy Jacks bathing in the tub. The art is everywhere and it’s incredible and inspiring how two artists have committed themselves so completely.

KO’s Phantom Lizzie & Calliope Jackalope Handpaint for AFA NYC 10.20

At long last: the full reveal of the long-legged lady Kathie’s been tormenting us with for weeks. Meet Phantom Lizzie: hand painted cast resin with oodles of hand-sculpted elements and a hella sexy pair of silver bat ears. Standing just under two-and-a-half feet, this gal is all legs and frankly, I can’t say I’d want it any other way.

And sittin’ on the dock of the bay beside Lizzie is a Calliope Jackalope handpaint: one of only a handful of small sculptures that will be on exhibition at AFA. Buckle up, folks: KO’s going big this year!

Haunted opens Oct. 20th at AFA NYC with an opening reception from 7pm to 9pm. Kathie will be attendance!

New Works in Progress by Kathie Olivas for ‘Haunted’ @ AFA NYC 10.20

Kathie Olivas will have a number of fairly large and ambitious sculpts as part of her solo exhibition, Haunted, at AFA NYC next month. With the opening just a few weeks away, these pieces will start to emerge from the shadows as they ready for their journey to the Big Apple. Some are nearly complete, others are still a work in progress. Regardless, hang on to your jaw because we haven’t seen this volume of work or level of complexity from KO alone in one place, ever. (Really.)

Haunted opens Oct. 20th at AFA NYC with a reception from 7pm to 9pm. Kathie will be in attendance, so stop in for some inspiration and a cocktail.

The in-progress goodness continues to trickle out from CP HQ as Kathie Olivas puts the finishing touches on her upcoming solo exhibition, Haunted, at AFA NYC next month. Loving all the hand sculpted elements of these pieces above … and if you think the Vishnu-esque arms of the one lady is impressive, wait till you see the gams that go with the gal on the left!

Haunted opens Oct. 20th at AFA in New York, NY. Reception with the artist will be held opening night from 7pm to 9pm.

The eye candy continues to trickle out from CP HQ, where Kathie is busy juggling preps for Paris this September with what’s shaping up to be a cracking solo exhibition the following month at AFA NYC. This round of ladies is for the latter: a striking (albeit slightly unsettling) original sculpt of Siamese twins, followed by a gorgeous Lizzie custom (these always kill me) and seriously freakish lady off to the left (watch your back). The bronze 4-legged is for Paris.
