Stranger Factory is excited to play host to MIGRATION, the latest collaborative exhibit by Chris Ryniak and Amanda Louise Spayd. The opening reception is at Stranger Factory on Friday, March 1st from 6 PM – 9 PM.

Chris Ryniak’s contributions to Migration include drawings, sculpture, paintings, and very small runs of editioned resin statues of his unique and immediately recognizable creatures. Occupying the world just out of our peripheral vision, Ryniak’s creatures travel through the underbrush in Migration and happily search for the shared meanings in their lives and ours. Covered in lumps, bumps, and smiles, Ryniak’s creatures exemplify singular bits of human personality as they giggle, stumble, stroll, and sometimes just eat their way through life.

Amanda Louise Spayd’s portion of Migration includes plush sculptures, drawings, small runs of editioned resin statues, and mixed media paintings. Packing their belongings and moving on at the turn of the season, Spayd’s hapless bunnies highlight the natural transition of life, and the shedding of detritus as we move from one phase to another. Forever in transition, yet frozen in a sort of adolescent wonder, Spayd’s sack rabbits are themselves scraps and leftovers, wrapped delicately in the cast-offs of others and trudging endlessly from one season to the next in search of their place in the world.

Both artists are close friends, and each has gone through major life transitions in the past few years including leaving their long-time homes for new dwellings. As they helped each other through their own migrations, they abandoned their old lives and learned to create themselves anew. This collaborative show is the culmination of several years of tears and triumphs between two friends who make beautiful monsters.

About Chris Ryniak: Chris was born as a baby in 1976 in the suburbs of Detroit. He spent his childhood basking in the warm glow of Saturday morning cartoons and flipping over rocks in search of insects, reptiles and ghosts. A graduate and former instructor of the Ringling School of Art and Design, he is now a painter and sculptor of all manner of critters. Chris’ work has been exhibited in galleries throughout the United States, Europe, and Southeast Asia. His paintings have also been published in numerous books and periodicals in multiple countries, and he is part of the Circus Posterus collective of artists. Chris resides in Ohio with his two children, one very old cat, and a collection of skulls that rivals many museums.

About Amanda Louise Spayd: Amanda is a maker of the highest order. An accomplished artist, sculptor, musician, soap maker, and student of perfumery, Amanda spends a lot of time in the woods, watching birds, collecting feathers, dead insects, bones, and other artifacts. She can often be found poking through antique stores looking for beat-up treasures for inspiration, which she finds in historical fashion and textiles, the excess and ridiculousness of high-societies past, natural materials and their inevitable decay, the raw and instinctual behaviors of animals, and in artists such as Jan Svankmajer, Odd Nerdrum, Joseph Cornell, and Hieronymous Bosch, among others. Amanda is also part of the Circus Posterus collective of artists.

Pickled Ginger

A new year and more sofubi! The test pulls for the second colorway of Chris Ryniak’s  Stinky Ginger sofubi from Tomenosuke + Circus Posterus have turned up. From the pinkish tones, this little lady has been aptly dubbed “Pickled Ginger,” with a possibility of a transparent or opaque version. No word yet on which color will be chosen, but rest assured, she will be hotter than wasabi.

Chris Ryniak to Join in FERG’s ‘Misfortune’?

As I was saying about the whole “when-it-rains-it-pours” thing: FERG revealed this little nugget of goodness on his Instagram a couple of days ago, along with the hashtags #ryniak #testpull and #littlemisfortune.

That pretty much sums it up, amirite? So. Series 2 of A Little Misfortune is in the works. But now we’re left wondering: when? Will this be a chase? Does it have the GID eye like the 5″ SDCC version? Is Series 2 an artist series? Clearly the only way to know for sure is if FERG sends me a case to investigate. I’ll be, uh … quality control. Yes, that’s it …

Chris Ryniak’s Nuggleworts are Here!

YOUR CRUMBS ARE BELONG TO US.

Following months of WIPs and teasers, we finally have a good look at Chris Ryniak’s Nuggleworts for Circus Annual, opening this Friday at Stranger Factory. From left to right, say hello to THISTLEWORT, DEADSTONEWORT and SHALLOWORT. Each colorway is an edition of TWO, so expect SIX of these little dudes to be scampering around the gallery. The Nuggles stand 6 inches and all are cast, cleaned, painted and loved by Chris. You’d expect them to look a little happier … separation anxiety, perhaps?

Circus Annual opens THIS FRIDAY! (Dec. 7) with a reception from 6-9pm. ABQ friends, you get first crack at the goods! Online collectors, expect the preview to hit your inbox this weekend. We’ll start taking email requests on Monday, Dec. 10th at Noon PST.

A Critter Invasion in the Monster Dungeon!

Production in Chris Ryniak’s studio is in full swing once again, filling up with piles of bulb-eyed pals for us all to squeal over. Watercolour monsters, gouache critters on cardboard, along with a small congregation of little resin critters are all in the works, and the latter has me particularly curious, indeed. Just look at those little bums!

Question is, what ever is all this for? Well, there are a couple notable events CMR is involved in, namely Circus Annual in December and Migration with Amanda Louise Spayd in March (*wink*), but only time will tell when these guys come out to play. So stick around, for plenty more is sure to emerge from the Monster Dungeon!

Are you ready for some awesome news? It is time for some updates on NEW RELEASES from Circus Posterus!

The Tomenosuke + Circus Posterus sofubi will be released in sets of 3 consisting of Stinky Ginger, “Toxic Marshmallow” Stingy Jack, and Calliope over the next 2 weeks on circusposterus.com .

Stingy Jack and Calliope will be available by themselves, but due to the smaller edition size, Stinky Ginger will only be available individually in-person at the Stranger Factory store.

Look for the remaining Sour Peach Zombambies to graze their way on to the Circus Posterus webstore this week!

The very last few Green Fade Masao Skelves and Frostbite Masao will show up on the Circus Posterus webstore in increments over the next month. Keep checking the store, because these may show up at any time!

Chris Ryniak’s Nuggleworts for Circus Annual @ Stranger Factory 12.7

Chris Ryniak is switching things up a bit this year for Circus Posterus’s annual winter group exhibition at Stranger Factory: instead of customizing pre-existing sculpts, he’s casting his very own critters! That’s right, Ryniak has become something of his own production house: the molds, the pouring, the pulling, the cleaning, the painting, all overseen entirely by the artist. So what’s first to come sneaking out from the monster dungeon? Why, Nuggleworts, dear boy! You may recall the brief teaser we posted a couple months back, or the small run he did for Septenary back in July. Well, these little dudes are BACK and a herd of six, 6-inch one-offs are making their way to the Factory next month for Circus Annual. The show kicks off Dec. 7th with a reception from 6-9pm; stick around for more sneak peeks of the exhibit as we draw closer to the date.

Stinky Ginger: An Anatomy

Chris Ryniak’s Stinky Ginger sofubi made a heck of an entrance at this year’s DesignerCon as a low-run, unpainted edition dubbed “Raw”. Retailing for 65 bucks per and run of just 65 pieces, most of the little Stinkers flew off the table before noon (did you see the photos?!), along with Kathie’s Calliope Jackalope and Brandt’s Toxic Marshmallow Stingy Jack.

Stinky is the third release from the Tomenosuke + Circus Posterus line of sofubi. If the name and header card weren’t any indication, she reeks something fierce with an equally-snarky attitude to match.

Chris’s original model stands on the left, accompanied by Yohei Kaneko’s modified version on the right. The figure was resized in scale with Stingy Jack and Calliope and slight adjustments were made to her features.
