Scott Radke’s Brilliant ‘King Killian’ Commission

Jaw. On. The. Floor.

Scott Radke was recently commissioned by indie filmmaker Jim McKenzie to bring two of his characters to life, Roach and Fred the dog, from McKenzie’s fantasy-drama short, King Killian.

I could go on and on about how fabulous these sculpts are, but your time would be far better served watching the film. It’s the most powerful 2 minutes and 23 seconds you’ll experience today.

I know. Hits you right where it hurts the most. The Killian project was McKenzie’s labour of love for two years, working on it while attending college and then eventually finishing it as part of his degree. If you’re interested in the project, check out the King Killian blog for some insight into the process.

Scott Radke’s Covey of Quail

  • by Brad
  • July 19, 2012January 29, 2013

Scott Radke’s been on a tear recently. Totems, little ladies, raccoons … and now a covey of quail. This would definitely be one of those ‘cover my eyes and point’ situations as these fall into that grey area with art multiples: conceptually, they’re an edition. Yet the sculpts are each handmade and (clearly) unique, giving them all the same appeal as a one-off. In other words: they all look great, are priced great, and the only not-so-great thing is having to choose.

The quail each measure 14″ tall by 8″ wide (give or take) and retail for $350. Not bad, right? And since tomorrow’s Friday, I encourage you indulge in a wee bit of spoiling of yourself. Half of them have already sold (yeah, get on it!) and only numbers 2, 3, 6 and 8 are left. Photos of each quail can be seen on Scott’s site here.

Scott Radke recently dazzled us yet again with another one of his lovely maidens, revealed last week via his Facebook page. Another masterpiece of burlap, clay and twigs, she looks to stand at least two feet. Predictably, her haunting gentleness caught someone’s gaze and she sold immediately. Scroll for more photos of stroll through the forest.

In a little over one month, Scott Radke has wrapped up his second totem commission, this one going out to actress/producer Nathalie Rheims. Standing an astonishing 6’9″ (81″) tall,  the sculpture is crafted from clay and burlap. These just keep getting better; peep the gallery below for close-ups of these enchanting creatures.

Scott Radke Totem: Snail and Raccoon Earn their Stripes

Scott Radke’s well into the painting stage on his second totem commission, with the snail and raccoon looking near if not entirely complete. The raccoon’s face is particularly stunning with the monotone palette and wispy accents.

Scott Radke’s Second Totem is All Stacked Up and Ready to Paint

Yeah, so like I was saying: Scott Radke doesn’t waste any time. Following last week’s teasers of his second totem commission for actress/producer Nathalie Rheims, comes the next (and final) creatures for the piece, which look to be a rabbit and goddess. I love the movement of this piece  and the liveliness of these creatures despite the totem being a static sculpture. The hunch of the raccoon from all of the weight, the goddess teetering on top … just incredible. Very excited to see it all painted up. More photos to come!

Wow. A week after Scott Radke shipped out his enormous animal totem commission to Morgan Spurlock, he gets right to work on another, this one for actress/producer Nathalie Rheims. Kicking it off with a snail base and raccoon rider, I’m super curious as to what other creatures this second totem will produce. More soon!

The totem is finally complete. Stacked four high and measuring an astounding 5’8″ with a three foot wingspan, Scott Radke pulled out all the stops for this commission for filmmaker Morgan Spurlock. Nearly six months in the making, this monster tower of human-animal hybrids is crafted from clay and burlap. Breathtaking. May it travel safely to its new owner! More images below.
