Stinky Ginger: An Anatomy

Chris Ryniak’s Stinky Ginger sofubi made a heck of an entrance at this year’s DesignerCon as a low-run, unpainted edition dubbed “Raw”. Retailing for 65 bucks per and run of just 65 pieces, most of the little Stinkers flew off the table before noon (did you see the photos?!), along with Kathie’s Calliope Jackalope and Brandt’s Toxic Marshmallow Stingy Jack.

Stinky is the third release from the Tomenosuke + Circus Posterus line of sofubi. If the name and header card weren’t any indication, she reeks something fierce with an equally-snarky attitude to match.

Chris’s original model stands on the left, accompanied by Yohei Kaneko’s modified version on the right. The figure was resized in scale with Stingy Jack and Calliope and slight adjustments were made to her features.

Chris Ryniak’s Wonderful Watercolors

  • by

This is easily the coolest thing happening on Instagram right now. A couple weeks ago, Chris Ryniak (@chrisryniak) dusted off his old watercolor kit and took it for a spin with his critters, just for fun. Well ermgahgerd. These things have pretty much set the interwebs ablaze and just when you think they can’t get any better, well, there’s tomorrow’s entry.

“I had been thinking about getting back into it for a few months since I really started ramping up the daily scribbles,” Chris writes. “I haven’t been painting as much these days and wanted to see if I could do something that was a little more immediate than acrylic.”

We’re glad you did. And the plus? Due to the overwhelming response, we WILL see these for sale in the future (unlike his daily scribbles) — so hold tight!

Say Cheese! A WIP from CMR for Lucha Libre! @ Rotofugi 10.5

  • by

Chris absolutely nailed his critters for Monsters & Misfits II and he doesn’t look to have lost any momentum with yet another original figure in the works, this one a Luchador for The Beast Brothers’ Lucha Libre! group exhibition opening at Rotofugi Oct. 5th. This guy is certainly not shy of showing off his gap-toothed grin!

Really looking forward to seeing this sculpt finished —  not only to quell my curiosity of what lurks beyond the frame, but he looks to be a fair-sized figure. Scale is always hard to determine in photos, but the pic below suggests there’s a pair of arms jutting out the front on the body, reminiscent of this guy (aka my absolute ALL TIME favourite CMR sculpt EVAR). … More visual stimuli soon!

Lucha Libre! runs opens Oct. 5th through the 28th at Rotofugi Gallery in Chicago. Participating artists also include The Beast Brothers, Angry Woebots, Brandt Peters and Kathie Olivas, BurunDANGA, Eric Merrill, Huck Gee, Jime Litwalk, Joe Capobianco, J*RYU, Junko Mizuno, Kronk, Michael Motorcycle, Patrick Cornolo, Phil Young, Sara Antoinette Martin, Scribe & Alisa, Mr. Shane Jessup, Shawnimals, Sket One, Sourbones, TADO, and Tim Tsui.

Chris Ryniak’s Trio of Nuggleworts for ‘Septenary’ @ OhNo!Doom 7.7

Ohhh boy, here comes trouble.

Chris Ryniak’s contribution for OhNo!Doom’s group sculpture show, Septenary, is a trio of buck toofed critters called Nuggleworts. Each of the 6-inch sculpts are one-of-a-kind, made with CMR lovin’ and are never to be seen like this again. And, believe it or not, the Nuggleworts (from left: Valencia, Juneau and Mangrove) are one of the rare CMR breeds that are devoid of the usual, well-endowed cheekage in the rear region (figured we’d share).

Septenary opens July 7th and runs through August 4th. The show preview has already gone out and these three are spoken for (sorry), but you can still pay ’em a visit if you find yourself in Chi-Town!

A Full Reveal of CMR’s ‘Bugglestump Forest’

Every once in a while a project comes along that really, genuinely, excites me. It may be because it’s new, appeals to my personal tastes, or is just out-of-this-world conceptually.

Chris Ryniak’s Bugglestump Forest nails all of these things.

Did you catch last week’s teaser? The wooden collab project with Austin-based Ink It Labs is definitely not what I was anticipating and this is one of those rare occasions where I’m damn happy I was wrong. This combines everything I love (and is right) about the designer toy movement: artistic merit, superior quality, ingenious design, affordability … and what’s more, it’s 2D and 3D at the same time. It’s a freaking wooden pop-up block, people! I’m sitting here totally tripping out and poking my computer screen.

Oh! And did I mention they’re packaged flat in a custom box? Look!

(Dimensions are 3” W, 2.5” L, 2.75” H if you’re wondering.)

This is just too cool. And I know you want one. Are you going to SDCC? Well, if you are, stop by the Dragatomi booth (#4935). Fifty will be available and they’re $50 each. If by freak occurrence there are any leftovers, they will be available via Dragatomi a bit later. And don’t fret if you’re not going to Comic Con; this isn’t an exclusive. Just sit tight here and release info will be along soon!

Mud Puddle Snybora from CMR x Rotofugi x Squibbles Ink Releasing Friday!

Watch your step when heading to Rotofugi this Friday because a new wave of Chris Ryniak’s Snybora will be hitting the streets for some splish splashin’! The Mud Puddle Snybora is a warm caramelized vinyl that features a burnt sienna rub and deep brown accents. His glossy black eyes glisten like the puddles he’s belly-gliding in! Hand painted by Kirby Kerr of Rotofugi and Joe Somers of Squibbles Ink, no two of the 3.5″ critters are exactly alike!

Snag one in store or online Friday, April 27th at 11am Central for about $35.

Chris Ryniak’s New ‘Stinky Ginger’ Sculpt

First came Brandt’s Stingy Jack figure (here), followed by Kathie’s Jackalope (front and centre here). And now, brand spankin’ new from Chris Ryniak is Stinky Ginger — the latest addition to Circus Posterus’  new line of sofubi vinyl figures. Look familiar? Indeed, this is the same nasty lookin’ fella that’s featured in Chris’ screen print from the Japan fundraiser sale. The master sculpt was literally just completed, so it’ll be some time before we see a release. Updates to come!

What Happens When You Steal a Bubblegut’s Ice Cream

You have to hand it to Chris Ryniak for his mastery of the tragicomical. I mean, this is ridiculous: this guy’s pout is so deep that his chin and forehead probably hurt, while for us it’s our guts from laughing. This is the freestanding Bubblegut we first glimpsed a few weeks back, and what’s funny is that his gut was so big that Chris had to shave some of it off. Poor little beast … I wonder when he last saw his toes. Anyway, we’ll see this fella with all of his friends at Monsters & Misfits II in Japan. Exhibition kicks off April 13th!

More M&MII WIPs from CMR!

Ryniak’s roll continues with a whole whack of new progress pics for Monsters & Misfits II. It’s like Candy Land over there! It appears we have another custom Octopus Girl in the works, along with a Lizzie and soft serve Bubblegut (click for full frontal), some Cuspid Skelve dentata, and a new detail shot of this fella. Always a treat watching these take shape. More pics through the click!

Custom Octopus Girl from Chris Ryniak for M&MII

Aww. We’ve got another heartbreaker on our hands here from Chris Ryniak for Monsters & Misfits II. Believe it or not, this was an Octopus Girl at one point (which was a KO Elizabeth … yes: a custom that was editioned and then customized again. Crazy!), and it seems she’s acquired a set of Bubblegut feet. The eyes on this one knocks my socks off; I’m always amazed at the amount of life they imbue that I half expect her to blink. And do her moles remind anyone else of Cadbury Mini Eggs?

Anyone?
