May brings two new exhibitions to Stranger Factory!

May brings two new exhibitions to Stranger Factory!
1

Japanese artist Erika Sanada presents several new expressive sculptures that she considers both odd and dreamy. Her softly bizarre ceramic creatures make their first debut at Stranger Factory in May with her solo exhibition “COPE.” As autobiographical spirit animals, her unique canines allow her to cope with her own anxiety and serve as empowering alter egos.

She recently earned her MFA in Ceramics at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

“My work reflects the weird and the creepy; I am fascinated with the dark side. “Odd Things” are my current body of work and I use ceramic for making bizarre creatures. They have extra body parts such as multiple arms, legs, teeth and ears.  These are how I express my sensitive mind. There are two reasons I create misshapen and abnormal work. One is my bitter childhood and the second is my constant anxieties.”

“Dubious Beasts: Life Cycles” By Shing Yin Khor and Leslie Levings this March at Stranger Factory

Stranger Factory – March Exhibit

Dubious Beasts: Life Cycles

Stranger Factory is excited to welcome the the third installation of the “Dubious Beasts” collaborative series of shows by Leslie Levings and Shing Yin Khor. In this show, the artists explore a universe of off kilter whimsy and inquire into the development processes of their curious creatures.

Leslie Levings is a sculptor renowned for her charming and personable Beastlies series. Her dubious creatures are elegant and lost in thought, cuddled into a nook of a tree, or perched over a quiet lake.

Shing Yin Khor is a sculptor and painter. Her dubious creatures are anxious and not particularly intelligent, a slightly alarmed look on their face as they appear in a range of sculptures and watercolour paintings detailing their observed behavior.

Paired with an obsession with natural history museums, trophy heads, and cabinets of curiosities, Levings and Khor bring to Stranger Factory a delightful menagerie of colourful, beady eyed critters – bending over clutches of eggs, and encased in cocoons, awaiting their final metamorphosis.

The exhibit runs March 6th through April 4th, with an opening reception on Friday, March 6th from 6 – 9 PM. Both artists will be in attendance.

PLEASE NOTE: This is the first show at Stranger Factory’s new location!

Jay Hollopeter for Winter Salon

  • by

We love seeing the various customs from our many artist friends of the Wandering Misfits and Jay Hollopeters’ vibrant painting style has always been one of our faves. This year, he’s bringing a mischievous Angel and Devil pair to the Winter Salon, complete with adorable little wings(the angel) and tempting ice cream cones(the devil, obviously).

Come check them out at the Winter Salon opening at Stranger Factory – this Thursday, December 4th!

A peek into Lana Crooks’ Studio

  • by

We’re a fan of Lana Crooks‘ masterfully detailed mini feltworks, and it’s always a treat to get some new studio shots from her. This time, she takes us on a small tour of her workspace – a delightful haven of vintage oddities and other ephemera.

Lana’s studio almost makes an artist’s life look romantic(it’s really not – it’s a lot of paperwork and organization). And, if you squint, you can catch a sneak peek of what Lana’s cooking up for Bewitching!

Delicate wings, and paint.
