We saw the original colorway of Calliope last November at DesignerCon, and now it is time for one of her alter egos to come forth! On sale Wednesday January 23, 2013 from the Tomenosuke + CP Sofubi line is the long-awaited release of Kathie Olivas’ Calliope Jackalope Sofubi #2 “Ivory”.
Starting that Wednesday, Calliope # 2 will be randomly listed in the Circus Posterus Store here for $95, and stocked at random times throughout the week. If you receive a “Sold Out” message – keep checking back because they will be back in stock in varying increments. The “Ivory” edition is limited to 120 pieces with CP and Tomenosuke each getting 60 of the edition. Each header card is signed and numbered by Kathie.

Well happy early holidays to us! This past week we’ve seen a couple of sweet reveals of Kathie Olivas’s second Calliope Jackalope sofubi colorway from Tomenosuke + Circus Posterus. A soft cream and light blue mix, you’ll notice a couple of subtle changes to the little lady this round, with the addition of eye reflections and a rosiness to her nose and lips. ETA is early 2013; official specs and release details to come!
In keeping with DesignerCon tradition, two collectible coins will be up for grabs to commemorate the event and this year features original art from Brandt Peters and Kathie Olivas! Inspired by the coins placed on the eyes of the deceased to cross the Acheron in Greek mythology, the ‘Death Coins’ feature Stingy Jack and Calliope Jackalope on one side, and candies on the other (you may recall seeing candies placed on eyes in some of KO’s paintings).
The 1.5″ metal coins retail for $20 per set and there are 100 sets in total. Grab some for good luck at booth #100! DesignerCon kicks off Nov. 3rd for one day only at the Pasadena Convention Center in lovely Pasadena, CA.

In and among the myriad of exciting new Tomenosuke + CP sofubi releases emerging at this year’s DesignerCon is Kathie Olivas’s long-awaited Calliope Jackalope #1. First seen as a prototype at Monsters & Misfits II last April, this beautiful little lady will debut in a robin’s egg blue colorway and is limited to just 120 pieces at $95ish a pop. Similar to Brandt’s Toxic Marshmallow Stingy Jack, which is also releasing at the Con, roughly half of the edition will be available and the remainder will then be divvied up between Tomenosuke-syoten and Stranger Factory for online sales later on. CP forum members, watch the boards for a lottery announcement!
Circus Posterus will have an entire booth dedicated to the Tomenosuke+CP line of sofubi at this year’s DesignerCon (#500), so be sure to stop by and check out the goods for yourself if you’ve yet to get your paws on some vinyl goodness. Previously on Calliope Jackalope, An Anatomy, Pt. II: Our little lady is assessed by Obitsu and it’s determined that the figure would require five molds. The wax master is sculpted, the metal molds are forged and the first Calliope test figure is born. Now: we add a splash of color.
With the test figures pulled and green-lighted by KO, it was time to bust out the Pantones and whip up a paint master for the factory to replicate. For her debut Calliope, Kathie chose a soft robin’s egg blue:
At a glance, Calliope’s paint finish seems relatively simple; buuuut … that definitely is not the case. The spray mask alone had to be applied three times more than that of Stingy Jack’s. The figure has a total of eight masks: propeller, face, broken antlers, whites of the eyes, the pupils, lips/cheeks, belly and zipper. The lips and cheeks were the most tedious as they had to be airbrushed by hand to create a realistic ‘rosiness’.

When KO first posted this a few weeks ago on Instagram (@circusposterus), citing the Calliope handpaint was “just for fun”, I wondered if we’d ever see the little lady again. Well, it appears Kathie has found herself a new travel buddy: similar to the travelling toy photos so many of us have seen (Podgypanda’s Baman and S Fisher Williams’ Milque Toast are personal faves), Calliope’s passport is already impressive with CP’s recent tour in Paris as part of Le Carnaval des Spectres.

With Baby Tattooville, Haunted and DesignerCon just around the corner, the rest of 2012 will be hoppin’ for the Circus. Let’s see if our little pink jet-setter makes any cameos!

Previously on Calliope Jackalope, An Anatomy: Calliope is rendered in 3D and from that a prototype is made for the factory to map out the mold process. We head there now for some mold-makin’, waxin’ action!
Like Stingy Jack, the Calliope prototype was taken to Obitsu to determine how many metal molds the figure will require. Given her complexity, she, too, would require five to cover her multiple parts: head, body, legs, hat, ears and tail.
The figure is re-cast in wax and the metal molds are made. From that, we get our first test:
And from there, the header card art is submitted by Brandt and Kathie and voila! Our first packaged Calliope!

It’s official! Kathie Olivas and Brandt Peters have just put the finishing touches on their last custom pieces for Le Carnaval des Spectres, which means the CP crew is DONE! [Insert collective sigh of relief here.]
Kathie wrapped up the beautiful “Shadow” Calliope Jackalope a couple days ago and admittedly, I’m sort of grateful … these little ladies have been teasing me for months; they’re mesmerizing and even more so in person. And as I’m sure you’ve noticed, they’re in good company with a few Grieving Greeters and Dark Wippos, which we’ll talk about very soon.
And then there’s Brandt’s final figure, which quite honestly bombed my inbox earlier this week. It’s freaking awesome, gang, and I don’t even know if I can share it. It’s all insane and Kaiju style and painted with a freaking airbrush.
Aw hell, I’ll give you a teaser. BUT THAT’S IT!
… Did I mention it’s a collaboration with Chris Ryniak? And just wait; this guy gets even better. Alas, I can say no more (and if you don’t hear from me tomorrow I’ve been fired :D). Almost all of the custom figures for this exhibition have remained a secret, lurking in the depths, eagerly awaiting opening night. Stay tuned … the curtain will be up before you know it.
Le Carnaval des Spectres opens Sept. 13th through Oct. 20th at Artoyz Shop + Galerie in Paris, France. The exhibition includes new works from Kathie Olivas, Brandt Peters, Travis Louie, Chris Ryniak, Amanda Louise Spayd, and Teodoru Badiu.
