In the works for Kathie Olivas’ SCOUT

  • by

Our enthusiasm for this show will be gently amplified through the month as we bring you glimpses of what Kathie Olivas has in store for all of us with her exhibition, “Scout“.

WIP

Kathie posted on instagram a work in progress painting with the tag “4 layers of under painting, only 10-15 more to go…”. This isn’t the finished product yet, but we can’t wait to see what this masked wanna-be tentacled super hero will look like when done!

Kathie Olivas‘ “Scout” opens April 5th at Stranger Factory along with Scott Radke’s  “Interface”, and Stephan Webb’s “Evolutionary End Game”. An opening reception will occur April 5th from 6-9pm.

Stephan Webb’s…T-Rex?

  • by

Stephan Webb, who will be opening EVOLUTIONARY END GAME at Stranger Factory in April, just sent us a little sneak peak of something prehistoric! Webb, a local Albuquerque favourite, melds biology themes with intricately cast bronze pieces to create incredibly detailed pieces of art.

Here, this fossil perches on Stephan’s arm like a bird. Considering that birds evolved from the dinosaur suborder Theropoda dinosaurs, of which the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex is a member – well, that seems awfully appropriate.

We’ll be updating you with more little sneak peeks of Stephan Webb’s show, so check back frequently!

Kathie Olivas, Scott Radke, and Stephan Webb at Stranger Factory this April

AprilHeader

We aren’t going to let anyone sit back too long this year because Stranger Factory has three new solo exhibitions coming in April from renowned artists Kathie Olivas, Scott Radke, and Stephen Webb. Get ready!

sf_homepageslide_apr_olivas

“Scout” finds Kathie Olivas searching for simplicity with a solo exhibit of new portraits, studies, customs, and original sculpts. This new show finds her simplifying her approach, and allowing the beauty of the individual to take the viewer’s focus as they join her and her creations in the search for the small truths in a larger world.

Kathie Olivas is an internationally exhibited multi-media artist from New Mexico. Through her current body of work she explores society’s insatiable desire to assign ‘cuteness’ and our discomfort with the unknown. A dark blend of early American portraiture set in post apocalyptic times, Kathie’s paintings and custom toys are a satirical look at how fear affects our sense of reality.

Scott Radke‘s “Interface” features original sculpts and a few customized Skelve figures by the enigmatic artist. His work is highly-sought after, incredibly detailed, and is at once comforting and unsettling. His creations evoke sympathy in the viewer, while hinting at a larger world beneath the surface of our own.

Scott Radke is a Cleveland-based artist who works from his subconscious imagery. Specializing in mixed media sculpture and animal/human hybrid explorations, his work is highly influenced by his affinity for nature. His work can be found from London to Los Angeles in major art collections, and even making cameo appearances in such films as Walt Disney’s Academy award-winning Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton.

Stephan Webb‘s “Evolutionary End Game” will feature a new series of detailed bronze sculptures from this unique artist. Webb’s artwork takes a surrealistic view of biological and evolutionary processes, and utilizes the medium of metal casting and sculpture as a commentary on the fabricated nature of our surroundings.

Stephan’s artwork constantly juxtaposes biological forms and figures with harsh geometric shapes and the coldness of metal to engage the viewer in a conversation about the roles that nature and technology play in our lives and to seek a harmonious balance between the two. Webb exhibits primarily in New Mexico, and is an emerging artist building a dedicated fan and collector base. This will be his third exhibit with Stranger Factory.

Keep an eye here for updates and sneaks from the upcoming show. To ensure you are on the preview list, please visit www.strangerfactory.com and sign up for email alerts. This three person exhibit opens Friday, April 5th with a reception from 6-8pm.

Art Nerds

Yes I think Amanda Louise Spayd and Chris Ryniak can celebrate now that all the months of hard work going into Migration is done.

The opening was beyond amazing and the ever so talented artists knocked us all to our feet with their work. The interwebs are inundated with images from a show, but we thought we would show you a few as quick wrap up after the jump.

Horns and ears and jewels, oh my!

She’s barely gotten to take a breath from the Migration madness, and Kathie Olivas is already plunging full tilt ahead into her April show at Stranger Factory, SCOUT.

Below is a little teaser image of what she’ll have in store, and if this is any indication, we’re in for a wonderful array of horns and floppy ears and tiny hats, as well as a treasure trove of Kathie’s other signature elements. Distressed Dolls from Amanda’s Workshop “The Patina of Time”

  • by

ALSworkshopThe workshops at Stranger Factory have become a huge hit! The ability to be part of a small lecture or hands on class with amazing high-caliber artists is still uncommon, and we got to experience one first hand this weekend with Amanda Louise Spayd.

Amanda’s workshop “The Patina of Time” focused on antiquing fabric to give it that nice “old world” or just old feel to it. Small blank dolls were provided for every participant to work with as a base and from there they had a full arsenal of paints, fabrics, buttons, thread, tools, and even sandpaper at their disposal.

Amanda gave an in-depth overview on how to make the magic of patina happen with her own blank doll examples and then let the participants jump in head first into their creations to be supplemented with her hands-on tutelage.

ALSworkshopteachAbove, Amanda is guiding the way to a perfect patina.

A little look at Migration!

  • by

Chris Ryniak and Amanda Louise Spayd’s Migration officially opens in about an hour, but the show is hung, the preview is up, and we think it’s about time to give you a quick look at this gorgeous show!

The centerpiece of this show is Chris and Amanda’s large collaboration piece, Gallivant and the Huskyshumbler. Standing at over two feet tall, this gorgeous beast and its squishy rider are well equipped and ready for a new adventure to some lucky collector’s house.

The three dimensional wall plaque series looks wonderful! These are retailing in the $250-$350 range, which is a steal for either Chris’ or Amanda’s work, so try to be at Stranger Factory tonight to snatch one up.

As per Stranger Factory tradition, the show setup is always gorgeous and complimentary to the pieces in the gallery, and that is certainly true for this show. Old boxes, weathered wooden stools, and miscellaneous antique trimmings…it’s a sight to behold!

For those of you not lucky enough to be at opening night tonight(like me! *sob), the online purchase period opens on Monday, March 4th, noon PST. More details are listed on the Online Preview Page, so please read them closely! The production pieces and any remaining art will be appearing in the Circus Posterus store in mid-March.

Brad is on the ground tonight in Albuquerque and reporting live on the Circus Posterus Instagram, so follow us on Instagram at @circusposterus and @strangerfactory for live updates on opening night. Our friends and photographers Amy Greenwood (@vinylgoddess) and Sara Harvey (@4theloveoftoys) are also at opening night, and their Instagram feeds have been filling up with delightful pictures, so we can also attempt to live vicariously through them, although the Rebel Donuts and breakfast burritos are not quite as delicious when experienced by someone else.

Migration opening tonight!

As a reminder, the retail half of Stranger Factory will remain open all day, so please come in to do your shopping! The gallery side will be open once the show is hung, but purchase inquiries will not be accepted before 6pm. There will be a number system for those waiting to purchase art from this show.

We looking forward to seeing you tonight! The Rebel Donuts, good company, and bad jokes are on us.
