The Devilish Monsters & Minions of My Ghoul Friday

  • by

Happy Hallow’s Eve, everyone! In continuing with the coverage of artists who are currently rocking my socks, it is of utmost pleasure to present a special Halloween edition and introduce you all to the quirks and creativity of one of my favourite ladies, Ghoul Friday. I discovered her work on a whim at Toronto’s FanExpo in August and have been hooked ever since. She’s from the city, makes awesome paper clay monsters and has also published her own book: Brains vs. Coffee, which quite hilariously explores the pros and cons of the consuming, enjoying, storing, preparing and disposing of each.

Friday is an ardent follower of Halloweenia, clearly. Most of us are in these parts, but she takes it to a whole ‘nother level, crafting most of the decorations herself and changing it up every year. I mean, seriously, people:

Now that’s a Halloween party we’d all want to go to, amirite? A self-taught sculptor who got her start making large-scale props for Halloween parties for nearly a decade, she took the plunge and started making her own little monsters and minions in 2009, and attended her first convention as a vendor that summer. She’s been at it ever since.

Friday’s creations are a combo of paper clay, paper mache, fabric and polymer clay, and while she’d like to say it’s because she’s a sort of eco-warrior, “a lot of it has to do with habits from being part of the Haunter community, where you build items from scavenged goods,” she explains.

Destination Designer Con: DrilOne

DrilOne has got his minions polished, painted, and prepared for DCon this Saturday.  Drils appears to be bringing a brand new rusty creation with 10 differing colors for the fans coming to the convention. Not too much news as of yet, but be sure to check back  for more info.  Also, we know he has a custom Peacemaker and a Visighost all set for the Circus Posterus booth #500. I do think Alex has some trick and treats up his sleeves for us, so keep a watchful eye.

London’s new Museum Of Curiosity

  • by

The twisted and the macabre will have a new residence in London. Mike of Black Rat Projects has a new endeavor he is starting, The Museum of Curiosity. Mike is known for his gallery and love of art, but he is also a collector of the weird and not so common. I am told the theme of the museum will be an interpretation of the Wunderkammern of renaissance Europe which the wealthy put together consisting of odds and ends from around the globe. This sounds the homes of many collectors and artists I know actually.

Now a Museum of Curiosity is just what you would think. In it’s walls and halls you will find dead things stuffed, skeletons, bones, eyeballs, teeth, devices, and more obscure artifacts that look like they could be in Dr. Frankenstein’s study. Something for everyone I think with a fancy for the odd.

We cant forget Mike’s love of art, because he will also be displaying works by Swoon, Candice Tripp, Butch Anthony, Oskar Rink, Giles Walker, Delaney Martin, Jessica Harrison, Tessa Farmer and Nancy Fouts to name a few. This could also be called The Museum of Badass Stuff I think.

The Museum opens Nov. 8 and then to the public Nov. 9 at
Pertwee, Anderson & Gold Gallery,
15 Bateman St.
Soho, London, W1D 3AQ

Destination Designer Con: Furrybones!

  • by

Misaki the artist behind Furrybones is heading to Designer Con! Designer Con has more awesome than Barney Stinson could imagine. First up, Furrybones will have the “Scorchie” posters seen above. These are limited to 25 in purple and 25 in sepia.

The Squeed Rockets are a nice DCon exclusive. There are only 5 versions in various colors., so these will not last long.

Who knows what other Furrybones characters she might bring along with her, but we do know, the Underbedz (image below) are most definitely making an appearance at the con. Look at them conspiring around a fire pondering mischief!

Misaki and all the Furrybones creations will be at booth #516 this Saturday Nov. 3.

SKULLS show at Wonderland Gallery

  • by

Kat Von D is opening a show that looks like it raided my supply room at work. The collective group show is titled and themed SKULLS at Wonderland Gallery. The show features 100 anatomically-correct skulls and 100 different approaches an artists can take with them. A few of the names bringing their skull renditions are Audrey Kawasaki, Mister Cartoon, Ryan Adams, Bam Margera, and Margaret Cho. If you are wondering about some of those names then you are correct because the show doesn’t just feature fine artists but actors, musicians, skateboarders, fashion icons, and more. I am curious to see what Nick Swardson pulls for his piece. This show looks really good in my opinion, but I have my own running list in my head of artists that need a skull of their own to paint up in the future.

The show opens Friday, Nov. 2nd.

Destination Designer Con: DKE Garage Sale

  • by

This weekend marks the 4th annual DKE Graveyard and Garage Sale with proceeds going to Los Angeles Fire Department “Spark of Love” Holiday Toy Drive.

A “Graveyard and garage Sale” by DKE is exactly what you might think it is. It is broken, smudged, discarded, bent, parts, tossed, bits, pieces, and random assortments of toys and such. You might find a head here and a body there, but this makes perfect fodder for customizing and more. Last year I got two Red Birds for $5 and they had just slight dings in them. They will also have boxes of loose action figures and more. So get ready to dig and and have fun, but this is one day only!

This all goes down Nov. 3
